The Series
? The Wolverines hold an 11-1 all-time series edge against the Cyclones. The two squads last met April 3, 2004, when Michigan won 196.375-196.315. Iowa State last defeated Michigan Jan. 26, 1980.
Last Time Out
? Iowa State put together its best meet of the season at No. 6 Auburn Jan. 23. The Cyclones scored a season-best tally despite falling to the Tigers, 196.275-195.225.
Cyclones Stay at 18
? Iowa State is ranked No. 18 for the second-straight week and has been in the top 25 the entire regular season.
Thompson's Scores Go North While Down South
? Senior Jasmine Thompson posted a season-best all-around score at Auburn. The McDonald, Ohio native, scored a 39.300 which is a mere .025 off her career best. Thompson tallied a career best on beam (9.900). In addition to her beam score, Thompson scored a season best on vault (9.725), while tying her season high on floor (9.850).
What a Difference a Year Makes
? After three meets, the Cyclones are scoring far better than they had at the same point last season. Iowa State has scored a combined 583.175 this season, compared to 578.500 at the same juncture a year ago. ISU is currently averaging a 194.392 while it was posting 192.833 a season ago.
? The Cyclones score of 195.225 at Auburn last Friday would have been the second-highest tally a season ago. The only score Iowa State posted last year that would have been higher was the 195.775 the Cyclones tallied at the Big 12 Championship, which resulted in a second-place showing.
Steady Improvement
? Iowa State has shown consistent improvement in each meet this season. The Cyclones started off the campaign with a 193.175 and improved to a 194.775 in its second outting. ISU blew past that score in its third meet, posting a 195.225 at Auburn in its first road test.
Raising the Bar on Bars
? For the second-consecutive meet, Iowa State increased its score on bars. At Auburn, the Cyclones scored a 49.000, the first time this season the Cyclones have reached the 49.000 barrier on any event.
Nationally Ranked on Floor, Beam and Bars
? After two meets, Iowa State stands among the nation's best on three events. The Cyclones are tied for 13th on beam (48.800), 17th on floor (48.708) and 19th on bars (48.583).
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championship, cemented the Cyclones' trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn., last season.
Healthy Cyclones
? To put it mildly, the Cyclones were injury plagued in 2008 as only six gymnasts were able to compete in all 12 meets. This season, injury issues appear to be slim. Both sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes and junior Megan Barnes missed significant action in 2008 due to injury and have been in the ISU lineup in all three meets this season.
Experience not an Issue for ISU
? The Cyclones have a squad full of seasoned veterans. ISU lost only one letterwinner from the 2008 campaign and returns 11. With a squad hit hard by injuries last year, opportunities for new gymnasts to compete were plentiful and with that came vital experience as Iowa State had 12 gymnasts who had meet experience before the start of the 2009 season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At No. 20 Michigan (7-2)
? The Wolverines are coming off a 194.850-194.425 Jan. 24 win at Minnesota.
? Michigan has defeated its last seven opponents with victories over Minnesota, North Carolina State, Kent State, Michigan State, Illinois and Western Michigan. The Wolverines' two losses came at the Jan. 2 Cancun Classic to LSU and Boise State.
? Michigan is ranked nationally on a pair of events. The Wolverines are 16th on floor, with an average score of 48.725, and 12th on bars (48.812).
? Michigan was ranked eighth in the preseason coaches' poll but currently sits at No. 20.
? Sophomore Kylee Botterman is in a tie for 17th nationally in the all-around rankings. Botterman has averaged a 39.225 this season.
? The Wolverines are coming off a strong 2008 campaign which saw them go 24-1 in dual meets, capture the Big Ten Championship title, down eventual national champion Georgia and advance to the NCAA Championship.
? Bev Plocki is in her 20th season as Michigan's head coach. She has guided the Wolverines to 16-straight NCAA Championships and 15 Big Ten titles in the last 17 campaigns. She is a nine-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and the 1994 NCAA Coach of the Year. Michigan has twice been NCAA runner-up under Plocki, while having six NCAA individual national champions.
