Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State is in its 39th season of gymnastics. The Cyclones have a 397-436-4 all-time record.
? The Cyclones open the 2009 campaign with a Big 12 Conference showdown Friday against Missouri at Hilton Coliseum at 7 p.m.
The Series
? The Tigers hold a 43-35 all-time edge over Iowa State. Last season the two teams split in a pair of matchups. Missouri claimed a 194.125-192.400 win Jan. 18 in Columbia, while the Cyclones downed the Tigers 195.775-195.225 at the Big 12 Championships March 29 in Norman, Okla. The last time the two squads met in Hilton Coliseum, ISU won 195.725-195.025 Feb. 2, 2007.
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championships, cemented the Cyclones a trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn.
Healthy Cyclones
? To put it mildly, the Cyclones were injury plagued in 2008 as only six gymnasts were able to compete in all 12 meets. This season, injury issues appear to be slim. Additionally, this year the Cyclones will have available sophomore Alex Grant and junior Jennifer Hornbaker, who both incurred season-ending injuries last campaign during the preseason. ISU should also receive the services of sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes and junior Megan Barnes as both missed significant action in 2008 due to injury.
Experience not an Issue for ISU
? The Cyclones have a squad full of seasoned veterans. ISU lost only one letterwinner from the 2008 campaign and returns 11. With a squad hit hard by injuries last year, opportunities for new gymnasts to compete were plentiful and with that came vital experience as Iowa State has 12 gymnasts who have meet experience.
Ronayne Opener Record
? Heading into his third season at Iowa State, head coach Jay Ronayne has done well in season-opening compeitions, going 3-1. He piloted the Cyclones to wins over Auburn, BYU and Missouri in the Cancun Classic in 2007 before falling to Nebraska to start last season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At Missouri
? The Tigers start the campaign tied with Boise State for 19th in the Gyminfo Coaches' Poll. Missouri started 2008 ranked 16th.
? Missouri returns 2008 Big 12 all-around champion, senior Adrianne Perry and the 2008 conference newcomer of the year, junior Sarah Shire. Shire transferred to Missouri from Utah before her sophomore campaign. Perry was Missouri's first ever Big 12 all-around champion with her score of 39.975. She also took home the league floor title with a 9.900.
? Shire and Perry were the clear leaders on the 2008 Missouri squad. The duo held or shared the top score for every event for the Tigers last season.
? The Tigers closed out their 2008 season with a 13-10 record, finishing fourth in the NCAA Central Regional (195.100) and a third-place showing at the Big 12 Championship (195.225).
? Head coach Rob Drass is in his ninth season at Missouri. Drass joined Missouri after being the top assistant at Nebraska for eight years. He graduated from Penn State in 1990 after a collegiate career which saw him compete at the NCAA Championships all four years.
