AMES, Iowa ? The Cyclone women's basketball newcomers showed no fear Sunday afternoon as they led the Cyclones in scoring, rebounding and assists as Iowa State downed Dubuque, 99-57, in an exhibition contest at Hilton Coliseum.
The win was a total team effort as all 11 available Cyclones saw action and seven players finished in double figures on the afternoon. The ISU newcomers combined for 59 of the Cyclones' 99 points.
“It's nice to get this thing started,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I think our kids were excited to play. It's been a long fall, and we appreciate Dubuque coming up. Overall we're really excited, we have a lot of new players, it's something to build on and now it starts. We have a lot of new faces but I hope our fans leave thinking that it's the same Iowa State team playing out there.”
Freshman Jessica Schroll led ISU in scoring with 18 points, while Chelsea Poppens recorded a double-double in her first career game in cardinal and gold with 14 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds. Chassidy Cole led the squad with nine assists. Also in double figures for ISU were Alison Lacey (12), Kelsey Bolte (13), Anna Prins (10) Whitney Williams (12) and Amanda Zimmerman (14). Iowa State shot 46.7 percent from the field (35-75) and 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. Jennifer Nichols led Dubuque in scoring with 21 points, as 19 Spartans saw action in the contest.
“We talked to Aus (Lacey) about getting the ball in the newcomers' hands early,” Fennelly said. “She has done a great job of leading the younger players in practice. We wanted them to have some touches early in the game. All five new kids can walk out of here and feel good about their first time at Hilton. There were some signs that were pretty encouraging for their first time playing.”
Lacey got the Cyclones started, hitting her first three-point attempt of the season, but from there the ISU freshmen took over. The Cyclones jumped out to a 15-4 lead behind 12 points from the newcomers, including six points and three rebounds by Poppens six and a half minutes into the contest.
After Dubuque's Jena Darwin converted a traditional three-point play to cut the Cyclones' lead to 26-13, Iowa State rattled of an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes, led by six points from Zimmerman. The run gave the Cyclones a 37-13 advantage.
The Cyclones closed the half on a 14-4 run over the final three and a half minutes, with Williams hitting back-to-back three-pointers and Schroll pitching in six points.
Iowa State took a 53-23 lead to the locker room. The Cyclones went 19-for-37 from the floor for 51.4 percent shooting in the first half and knocked down 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from downtown in the opening stanza. Three players finished the first 20 minutes in double figures, including Williams (12), Poppens (10) and Zimmerman (10).
The Cyclones didn't let up coming out of intermission, going on an 11-2 run. Prins got the half started with a field goal and added another two points, while Poppens turned in four points in the stretch to put ISU ahead 64-25.
Bolte sparked the Cyclones as she scored 12 points in a 15-3 ISU run to give the Cyclones an 84-37 lead. After being quiet most of the game, Bolte hit back-to-back treys in the midst of that stretch.
The Cyclones will finish off the exhibition slate next Sunday when they play host to Minnesota, Crookston at 2 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The regular season will open on Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. against Florida Atlantic.
