Cyclones Block Way To School-Record 13th Big 12 Win

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Victoria Henson had 15 kills and 12 digs and Iowa State had 11 blocks as the No. 8 Cyclones swept Texas A&M, 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 31-29), for their school-record 13th Big 12 win of the season. It marks just the second win ever for Iowa State in College Station.
The Cyclones (21-4, 13-3 Big 12) held Texas A&M (14-9, 7-8) to just a .157 hitting percentage, stuffing back 11 Aggie attacks. Freshman Jamie Straube led the way at the net with a career-high three solo blocks to go along with five block assists. Henson added a solo block and four block assists.
“I feel like that was a true team effort tonight, both offensively and defensively,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “We asked some different things of our blockers and our left sides really responded. I'm pleased with how we bounced back from the Nebraska loss.”
Rachel Hockaday joined Henson in double-figures with 12 kills and 18 digs. Kaylee Manns recorded her 63rd career double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs. Ashley Mass notched a match-high 20 digs for the Cyclones, who were out dug 72-67 in the match.
In the opening set, ISU blistered the ball at a .400 clip behind eight kills on 10 Henson swings to win 25-22. The Cyclones led 6-4 but A&M responded with six in a row to go up 10-6. ISU slowly chipped away at the Aggie advantage and finally tied it at 20-20 with a kill from Manns and two more from Henson. ISU then got a kill from Straube that was sandwiched between two more rockets from Henson to go up 23-21. A&M closed the gap to one, but Straube and Petersen blocked an Aggie attack and Hockaday finished it with her fourth kill of the set.
In the second, ISU jumped out to a 5-1 lead but A&M rallied back to tie it at 5-5. The teams went back-and-forth until ISU went up 15-10. The Aggies had another rally in them, tying it at 20-20 before the Cyclones scored five of the final seven to win 25-22. Straube finished the set with three solo blocks and two block assists.
The third set was a marathon with ISU taking the 31-29 win to get the sweep. ISU led 21-19, but the Aggies scored four in a row to go up 23-21. The Aggies then led 24-22 but ISU got a kill from Manns and another from Henson to tie it at 24-24.
Straube and Petersen then got a block give the Cyclones match point at 25-24, but the Aggies answered with two in a row to go up 26-25. Henson then notched another kill to tie it up at 26 all. Petersen got a big kill to tie it again at 27 all before the Aggies had another set point at 28-27. Stadick then had back-to-back kills to make it 29-28 ISU. After the Cyclones were unable to finish the set on the next point, Hockaday ripped a kill and Henson finished it with her 15th kill of the match.
A&M was led by Sarah Ammerman's 18 kills. Mary Batis had 18 digs to lead the Aggies.
The Cyclones travel to Kansas State for a Saturday match against the Wildcats. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
