AMES, Iowa?New faces will be aplenty in 2010-11 on the Iowa State gymnastics squad, as Cyclone head coach Jay Ronayne added six gymnasts from all across the map for next year's campaign.
Henrietta Green (San Bernadino, Calif.), Milan Ivory (Marietta, Ga.), Hailey Johnson (Covina, Calif.), Megan McDonald (Woodbridge, Va.), Camille Santerre-Gervais (Saint-Lazare, Quebec) and Michelle Shealy (Snellville, Ga.) are set to become members of the incoming class in 2010-11.
“I am very, very pleased to have these six fine young student-athletes joining our program next year,” Ronayne said. “They are all very talented gymnasts who will bring a variety of assets to our team. All of them were recruited by a lot of the major gymnastics programs in the NCAA, and I feel honored they chose to be Cyclones.”
Shealy, a former junior international competitor for the United States, is fresh off winning the 2009 Junior Olympic Senior A beam title. The future Iowa Stater also nailed a perfect 10 on the floor to lead her high school squad to the team title on the final rotation in 2009. Shealy took home the Georgia high school state beam, floor and all-around titles this year.
“I have been closely monitoring (Shealy's) gymnastics career for almost five years,” Ronayne said. “I knew I wanted her on my team back when she was a junior elite. She was the first of the six to verbally commit to us a year ago. She is a very powerful athlete, who is capable of some big skills on floor and vault but also has the grace to make beam look easy. Combine all of that talent with her winning personality and she will be a champion.”
Green competed against Shealy in the 2009 Junior Olympics in the Senior A division and placed third on bars and eighth on floor at the competition. The San Bernadino, Calif., native also won the California state floor, all-around, gymnast-of-the-year and Region 1 floor crowns in 2009.
Johnson comes to Iowa State fresh off a California state beam championship. Johnson placed fourth on beam and eighth in the all-around at the 2008 Junior Olympics in the Level D division.
Ronayne is excited about what both Green and Johnson will bring for the 2011 season.
“They both have an incredibly strong base of fundamentals, which I think will be a tremendous benefit to our team next year,” Ronayne said. “They both come from coaches that teach and stress the importance of basic technique and clean execution of skills. Their solid basics and polished performances form a great foundation for us to build upon. Their skill level will continue to grow in our program, and they will both be putting up some big scores for ISU in all of the events.”
Ivory placed 11th on vault, 10th on floor and 27th in the all-around in the 2009 Junior Olympics competing in the Senior A division against Shealy and Green. Ivory was the 2009 Region 8 champion on vault and placed third and eighth on beam and the all-around, respectively, at the event. In 2008, Ivory took third on vault at the Junior Olympics in the Junior C class.
“Milan is known for her raw athleticism,” Ronayne said. “She is an extremely powerful tumbler and vaulter. She still needs a little refinement to control all of her power, but she has the makings to be a very dynamic NCAA gymnast. It will be fun to see her talent blossom during her college career.”
Santerre-Gervais placed fourth in the all-around at the 2009 Canadian Gymnastics Championships, taking fourth on bars, eighth on beam and 10th on floor. Santerre-Gervais trained at Gymnix in Quebec.
“Camille's international experience will give her a little bit of an edge on a lot of her competitors,” Ronayne said. “She will be a great college gymnast. Much like Hailey (Johnson) and Henri (Green), Camille's training background has produced a gymnast who is very aesthetically pleasing to watch. Her form, presence and line make it easy for the judges to reward her with the high scores she deserves. She is an all-arounder who will particularly help us out on bars and floor.”
McDonald brings to Ames three-straight Virginia high school team titles and a second-place finish in the state all-around in 2009. The future Cyclone was named the Washington Post All-Met gymnast of the year in 2009, after winning the Northwest Region and district all-around crowns.
“I met Megan fairly late in the recruiting process and am glad I had the opportunity to meet her,” Ronayne said. “She will help us gain some needed quality depth in all of the events. Not only is she a solid all-arounder who will probably compete in all four events, I also see her making an immediate impact on the team with her charisma and energy. I expect to see some big contributions from Megan on and off the floor of competition.
“Overall, I feel this class is pretty well balanced with regard to strengths and weaknesses,” Ronayne said. “Since they are replacing about one third of the team, I look forward to a bright future for the Cyclones.”
The Iowa State gymnastics team starts its 2010 season Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum against Wisconsin-Stout.
