AMES, Iowa ? Senior Alison Lacey moved into the top 10 of Iowa State's career scoring chart and moved up to fourth place in career assists as she led the Cyclones to a 66-62 win over North Carolina A&T in the Cyclone Challenge Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Lacey finished with 22 points to move into 10th place with 1,330 career points. She passed former teammate Heather Ezell, who was in attendance while on break from playing in Iceland. Freshman Chelsea Poppens had 12 points, including 10 in the first half, and Kelsey Bolte also finished with 12. Denae Stuckey recorded a season-high tying 10 rebounds to lead ISU on the glass.
North Carolina A&T pushed the Cyclones to the very end. The Aggies shot 43.6 percent from the field and 53.3 percent (8-15) from beyond the arc. Iowa State countered with a 40.4 percent shooting effort from the field, while being held to a season-low four three-pointers. The Cyclones narrowly outrebounded the Aggies, 34-31. Amber Calvin led North Carolina A&T with 16 points, while Ta'Wuana Cook finished with 14 points.
Iowa State clung to a 34-33 halftime lead, with 13 points from Lacey and 10 from Poppens. After missing their first four shots of the game, the Cyclones jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Aggies proved early they were going to make a game of it. North Carolina A&T responded with an 8-0 run to take a 10-8 advantage.
Iowa State went ahead 22-20 on a field goal by Amanda Zimmerman, before the Aggies rolled out a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the half, 27-22. Iowa State tied the game at 27-all, and after an Aggie score, Lacey scored six straight points to give the Cyclones a 34-29 edge. North Carolina A&T scored the final four points of the half.
Both teams struggled to score coming out of the break, as they combined for six points over the first four minutes of the half. Bolte scored to give ISU a 38-35 edge and after a pair of Aggie free throws, freshman Jessica Schroll took over, scoring ISU's next eight points, to give it a 46-42 lead.
Cook nailed a three-pointer to give North Carolina A&T its first lead of the half in the midst of a 7-0 run. The Aggies led 49-46 with 10 and a half minutes to go in the contest. The Cyclones retook the lead, 52-49, when Iowa State missed three consecutive shots and Stuckey came up with three straight rebounds and on the final rebound, Schroll found Poppens under the basket for a lay in.
North Carolina A&T took its final lead, 53-52, but Lacey scored a traditional three-point play to go back ahead. Despite the ISU lead, the game remained close the rest of the way. ISU went up 64-59 on a free throw by Stuckey, but Jaquayla Berry nailed a three-pointer with just seven seconds left to close the gap to 64-62. Bolte hit a pair of free throws to give Iowa State it's final margin.
Iowa State will face Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, while UMKC and North Carolina A&T will face off at 5 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum in the final day of the Cyclone Challenge.
UMKC 66, Fairfield 63
The UMKC Kangaroos came back from a one-point first-half deficit to defeat Fairfield, 66-63, in the first game of the Cyclone Challenge. Kaycie Boyles scored a game-high 20 points and recorded a team-high eight rebounds in the win. Simone Bridges had 18 points, going 8-for-9 from the field for the Roos. UMKC shot 49.1 percent from the field and converted nine steals into 21 points off turnovers. Fairfield had three players in double figures, led by Stephanie Geehan, who recorded her seventh consecutive double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Stags outrebounded UMKC, 39-31, but committed 18 turnovers in the loss. Iowa State will face Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while UMKC will face North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m.
