CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team improved its season dual record to 6-1 with victories over Northern Iowa (221-77) and UW-Green Bay (185-113) Saturday in Cedar Falls.
“We asked our team to stand up and compete against the two teams and they did that from the start,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said.
Helping lead the Cyclones in the early portions of competition was senior Lindsey Behrens. Behrens anchored the winning 200 medley relay team and also took home a victory in the 200 freestyle.
“Lindsey swam really well in the 200 free and winning 200 medley relay,” Sorenson said. “She wasn't feeling well near the end of the meet and that hindered her in her other races.”
The Cyclones got a four victories out of Nan Liu, increasing her season tally to 17. Liu was a member of the winning 200 medley and free relay teams. She also picked up wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly.
One of the more dramatic races of the afternoon came courtesy of Jenny Vondenkamp. The junior came from behind, catching the Panthers's Chelsea Hartman and Green Bay's Deanna DeGrand to pick up a victory in the 1000 free.
“Jenny had a great 1000 free, coming from behind in third to win,” Sorenson said.
Jeli Nixt collected three victories on the day with wins in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breast and 200 medley relay. Abby Glaser picked up a trio of wins in the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 50 free. Dani Harris (200 IM, 200 free relay) and Frances Calzada (100 free, 200 free relay) also picked up pairs of wins on the day.
In the diving well, Tien Tran completed another sweep of the diving events, taking the 1-meter (263.35) and 3-meter (306.80) titles. Tran has not dropped a diving event since getting shutout at Illinois back in October.
"On 1-meter Tien was very strong,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “On 3-meter she just missed one dive a little bit, but otherwise was great.”
Warrick was also pleased with the continued improvement of the divers.
“The whole team dove well,” Warrick said. “We saw some improvements that we have been working on in practice. Lauren (Naeve) and Justine (Anders) were two divers who stood out for me today.
The Cyclones return home to Beyer Pool for their annual showdown with Iowa as part of the HyVee Cy-Hawk Series on Friday, Dec. 11. The first race begins at 6 p.m.
