The Series
? The Cyclones boast a 47-22 all-time series edge in the intrastate rivalry. Last season, the two squads split with Iowa State winning 195.125-193.800 Feb. 22 in Hilton Coliseum. The Hawkeyes were victorious, 195.350-192.650, March 7, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Last Time Out
? The Iowa State gymnastics team led for three events Feb. 7 in the Sports Pavilion, but a 49.075 by No. 18 Minnesota on floor in the final rotation was enough to let the Gophers slip past the Cyclones 195.775-195.225. ISU tied its season-best score despite the setback.
Cyclones Ranked No. 19
? The Cyclones moved up one spot to No. 19 in the latest national gymnastics rankings. Iowa State has been ranked in the top 25 for the entire regular season.
Iowa, Twice in Four Days
? The Cyclones will battle the Hawkeyes twice in less than a week as the two squads square off Thursday, Feb. 12 and then Monday, Feb. 16. The first matchup is at Hilton Coliseum and then the two teams will meet in Iowa City at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the second contest.
Nationally Ranked on Beam, Bars and Floor
? Iowa State stands among elite company in three events. The Cyclones are ranked 13th on beam with an average score of 48.745, tied for 17th on bars (48.650) and are 22nd on floor (48.650).
Floored by Floor
? The Cyclones scored their highest score on any event this season with a 49.075 on floor at Minnesota, Feb. 7. The Iowa State effort was buoyed by 9.900s from senior Jasmine Thompson and freshman Michelle Browning, while junior Jody McKellar made her career debut on floor, posting a 9.800.
Vaulting to New Heights
? The event which has troubled the Cyclones most this season, vault, was a strength in the Feb. 7 meet at Minnesota. Iowa State tallied a season-best 49.075, led by junior Megan Barnes' career-high-tying 9.900.
McKellar and Browning Have a Big Night
? Junior Jody McKellar made her career debut in the all-around and on floor for the Cyclones Feb. 7 at Minnesota and produced. The Calgary, Alberta, native scored a 9.800 on floor, added a career-high 9.800 on vault en route to a 39.100 in the all-around
? Freshman Michelle Browning hit on her three events at Minnesota. The Houston, Texas, native tied the Cyclone season high on floor with a 9.900, scored a 9.875 and sprinkled in a 9.750 on vault. Browning took home co-titles on both floor and beam.
Top-25 Gauntlet
? The Cyclones will face their sixth-straight top-25 foe when they meet 25th-ranked Iowa. The Cyclones have faced No. 18 Minnesota, No. 16 Michigan, No. 13 Missouri, No. 12 Nebraska and No. 5 Auburn, in addition to the Hawkeyes.
Maccani Receives Big 12 Accolades
? Senior Ceilia Maccani won the balance beam title at Michigan with a career-high 9.850 while also scoring a season-best 9.750 on vault and a 9.750 on bars. The Racine, Wis. native's performance earned her a share of the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week with Oklahoma's Melanie Root. It marks the first time the ISU three-event specialist received a weekly Big 12 honor. The event specialist honor goes to the top non-all-around gymnast in the Big 12 each week.
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championship, cemented the Cyclones' trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn., last season.
Healthy Cyclones
? To put it mildly, the Cyclones were injury plagued in 2008 as only six gymnasts were able to compete in all 12 meets. This season, injury issues appear to be slim. Both sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes and junior Megan Barnes missed significant action in 2008 due to injury and have been in the ISU lineup in all three meets this season.
Experience not an Issue for ISU
? The Cyclones have a squad full of seasoned veterans. ISU lost only one letterwinner from the 2008 campaign and returns 11. With a squad hit hard by injuries last year, opportunities for new gymnasts to compete were plentiful and with that came vital experience as Iowa State had 12 gymnasts who had meet experience before the start of the 2009 season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At No. 25 Iowa (6-3)
? The Hawkeyes are coming off a 195.225-194.250 loss at Ohio State on Feb. 7.
? Iowa has recorded wins against Michigan State, Illinois State, West Virginia, Illinois, Texas Women's University and Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Hawkeyes have dropped contests to LSU, Southeast Missouri State and Ohio State.
? Iowa is ranked 19th in the country on beam with an average score of 48.535.
? Senior Jennifer Simbhudas is ranked 14th nationally on floor with an average score of 9.860.
? Larissa Libby is in her fifth season as the head coach at Iowa. Libby was the 2008 co-Big Ten Coach of the Year and has guided the Hawkeyes to two regional competitions (2008 and 2005) during her tenure. Libby was a member of the 1987 and 1989 Canadian world championship teams before competing at LSU, where she was the 1995 Central Region bar champion.
