AMES, Iowa- By any standard, Iowa State's Beauty and the Beast event, featuring simultaneous gymnastics and wrestling matches Friday in Hilton Coliseum was a major success. An Iowa State gymnastics meet record 7,224 fans watched No. 20 Iowa State beat Minnesota (194.600-191.475) as the No. 3 Cyclone wrestling team beat the No. 12 Gophers, 29-6. The entire evening would not have been possible but for the ISU athletics department's event management team. The setup was a challenge.

Teams of workers began to setup for the evening's entertainment after Friday morning basketball practice.
“The men's basketball team was very flexible. This allowed us to start setting everything up earlier,” Honnold said. “It was a true team effort within the athletics department”
The layout of the event was also a team effort, between event management and the marketing department. Through the design program AutoCAD, the group was able to create a blueprint for the event.
“The design of the event was created by both us and Nathan Terry from marketing,” Honnold said. “We had a big meeting to discuss what the layout should look like and it worked out really well for us.”
While the event staff was finishing up getting the floor ready, fans lined up on the concourse waiting for an autograph from Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson, who provided gymnastics commentary on the televised event. The event's wrestling competition was also televised.
The success of Friday's event means another Beauty and the Beast event can't be too far away.
