The Series
? The Sooners carry a 38-14-1 all-time series advantage. The two teams have had an interesting past two seasons against one another. In 2008, a 9.950 from Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms on the last event of the Big 12 Championships pushed the Sooners past ISU for the league crown by .1 of a point. At the 2007 NCAA Central Region championship, the two squads tied at 195.925, but Oklahoma advanced to the NCAA Championships via a tiebreaker.
Last Time Out
? The No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team found its winning ways Friday night in front of the largest gymnastics crowd in program history in the Beauty and the Beast competition. The ISU gymnasts ran past the Gophers 194.600-191.475 before 7,224 fans in Hilton Coliseum, more than double the previous all-time Cyclone attendance high. In the multi-sport extravaganza, the Iowa State wrestling squad also took on the Minnesota grapplers, winning 29-6.
Beauty and the Beast, a Record-Breaking Night
? The crowd of 7,224 eclipsed the previous Cyclone attendance mark of 3,429 set Jan. 19, 2007 against Nebraska. The previous high also marked the Hilton Coliseum debut for ISU coach Jay Ronayne.
Maccani's Night Was a Beauty
? Senior Ceilia Maccani scored a career-high 9.925 on the bars against Minnesota. Her score was the highest a Cyclone has tallied on any event this season and makes her only the ninth Cyclone to ever record a 9.925 or better on bars. Maccani's score also places her in a tie for the fourth-highest mark in program history.
? Maccani's bars effort, along with her solid vault (9.800) and beam (9.775) against Minnesota showings earned her the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
Fantastic Finish on Floor
? Iowa State closed out the Beauty and Beast meet in grand form. The Cyclones sent the record crowd home happy with a 49.225 on floor, which tied for the 16th-highest tally on the apparatus in program history. It also stands as the highest tally ISU has scored on any event this season.
Top-25 Gauntlet
? The Cyclones have faced a schedule filled with top-25 sqauds. Iowa State has met No. 25 Iowa, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 16 Michigan, No. 13 Missouri, No. 12 Nebraska and No. 5 Auburn so far this season.
Thompson a Consistent Force on Floor
? Senior Jasmine Thompson has scored lower than a 9.850 on floor on only one occasion this season, and it was a 9.800. Ranked 13th nationally, Thompson has scored as high as 9.900 on the event. The McDonald, Ohio, native scored her second 9.900 of the season to close out the Beauty and the Beast meet.
Injured Barnes
? Junior all-arounder Megan Barnes will be out of the Cyclone lineup for the foreseeable future. The team leader on vault (9.900) has been out the past two meets (at Iowa, vs. Minnesota).
Nationally Ranked on Bars and Beam
? The Cyclones stand among the nation's elite in a pair of events. Iowa State is No. 15 on bars and No. 16 on beam.
Maccani Receives Big 12 Accolades
? Senior Ceilia Maccani won the balance beam title at Michigan with a career-high 9.850 while also scoring a season-best 9.750 on vault and a 9.750 on bars. The Racine, Wis. native's performance earned her a share of the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week with Oklahoma's Melanie Root. It marks the first time the ISU three-event specialist received a weekly Big 12 honor. The event specialist honor goes to the top non-all-around gymnast in the Big 12 each week.
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championship, cemented the Cyclones' trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn., last season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At No. 10 Oklahoma (6-3; 1-1)
? The Sooners are coming off a Feb. 20 sweep of Brown, Missouri and West Virginia. Oklahoma notched a 196.375 in the event while Missouri scored a 196.225 to take second.
? The Sooners are nationally ranked on all four events. They stand at No. 8 on vault with a qualifying score of 49.115, 12th on bars (48.950), fifth on beam (49.085) and ninth on floor (49.090).
? Oklahoma took the Big 12 title in 2008, while placing eighth at the NCAA Championships.
? Head coach K.J. Kindler is in her third season leading Oklahoma. Kindler is a four-time Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year recipient and was the 2005 national coach of the year. Kindler previously coached at Iowa State, where she helped guide the Cyclones to the 2006 Super Six.
