The Series
? The Gophers hold a 35-26 all-time series edge against the Cyclones. The two squads last met March 2, 2008, when Minnesota edged Iowa State 194.950-194.425. The Cyclones last downed the Gophers Jan. 13, 2007 (194.525-194.400).
Last Time Out
? The Cyclones tallied a season-best beam score of 49.000 but eventually fell at No. 20 Michigan 195.875-193.900 Jan. 31 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Cyclones Ranked No. 20
? The Cyclones continued their regular-season-long run in the top 25 as they landed at No. 20 in the Feb. 2 national rankings.
Maccani Receives Big 12 Accolades
? Senior Ceilia Maccani won the balance beam title at Michigan with a career-high 9.850 while also scoring a season-best 9.750 on vault and a 9.750 on bars. The Racine, Wis. native's performance earned her a share of the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week with Oklahoma's Melanie Root. It marks the first time the ISU three-event specialist received a weekly Big 12 honor. The event specialist honor goes to the top non-all-around gymnast in the Big 12 each week.
Nationally Ranked on Beam and Bars
? Iowa State stands among elite company on a pair of events. The Cyclones are ranked 11th nationally on beam with an average score of 48.850 and 20th on bars (48.600).
Dilbert on the Comeback Trail
? Last season's team MVP, Nikki Dilbert, showed signs that she is finding her 2008 form against Michigan. The junior made her season debut on bars and scored a season-best 9.800 on vault.
A Homecoming for Swyningan and Dilbert
? When the Cyclones compete in Minneapolis, it will be a return home for junior Nikki Dilbert and sophomore Jasmine Swyningan. Dilbert hails from Champlin, Minn. (a Minneapolis suburb) and Swyningan is a St. Paul native.
Top-20 Gauntlet
? The Cyclones will face their fifth-straight top-20 foe when they meet 18th-ranked Minnesota. The Cyclones have faced No. 16 Michigan, No. 13 Missouri, No. 12 Nebraska and No. 5 Auburn, in addition to the Gophers.
End of the Road Trip
? Saturday will mark the Cyclones' third-consecutive road trip, the longest Iowa State will spend away from home this season. In fact, ISU will not be away from Hilton Coliseum for even back-to-back meets again during the regular season.
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championship, cemented the Cyclones' trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn., last season.
Healthy Cyclones
? To put it mildly, the Cyclones were injury plagued in 2008 as only six gymnasts were able to compete in all 12 meets. This season, injury issues appear to be slim. Both sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes and junior Megan Barnes missed significant action in 2008 due to injury and have been in the ISU lineup in all three meets this season.
Experience not an Issue for ISU
? The Cyclones have a squad full of seasoned veterans. ISU lost only one letterwinner from the 2008 campaign and returns 11. With a squad hit hard by injuries last year, opportunities for new gymnasts to compete were plentiful and with that came vital experience as Iowa State had 12 gymnasts who had meet experience before the start of the 2009 season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At No. 18 Minnesota (1-3)
? The Gophers are coming off a season-best score of 195.675 at Oklahoma Jan. 30. Despite the tally, Minnesota fell to the Sooners 196.500-195.675.
? Minnesota started its season off with a win against Arizona but has dropped its last three competitions (Denver, Michigan and Oklahoma).
?The Gophers are nationally ranked on a pair of events. Minnesota stands 15th on beam with an average score of 48.681 and 11th on bars (48.925).
? The Gophers advanced to the NCAA North Central Regional Championship in 2008, where they finished sixth.
? Jim and Meg Stephenson are in their 11th season as the co-head coaches at Minnesota. Jim spent the previous five campaigns as the leader of the Minnesota gymnastics team. The tandem has won two Big Ten Coach of the Year awards (2002 and 1998) as well as Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2002. The duo led the Gophers to a ninth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, the highest in program history. Jim came to Minnesota after serving as an assistant at Utah. Meg was a consultant at Utah prior to coming to Minnesota.
