MACOMB, Ill.?Senior Elise Reid scored with 3:35 remaining Sunday afternoon to give a shorthanded Iowa State soccer team a 2-1 win over Western Illinois at the John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
Reid's goal was her first of the season and was part of a match in which she also had an assist on the opening goal. Freshman Jordan Wagner assisted on Reid's game-winning goal. The assist was Wagner's second of the season.
“Elise came into the game in the first half and made a difference,” ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “On the winner, she made a beautiful run through the box and put it away. She did what we needed from her today.”
Iowa State (4-0-3) opened the scoring 33:42 into the match. Freshman Amanda Woelfel continued her strong start to her ISU career when she headed in a cross from Reid. It was Woelfel's third goal of the campaign and Reid's first assist this season. The goal marked the sixth-straight match the Cyclones have scored first.
The Cyclones would take their 1-0 lead into the intermission. ISU also had a 10-2 shots advantage at halftime.
The Leathernecks leveled the contest 19:42 into the second half off a Kellie Julius goal.
Iowa State's proposition got even more difficult in the 71st minute, when junior Jordan Bishop was shown a red card. As a result of the red card, the Cyclones had to play a player down for the remainder of the match.
The Cyclones appeared to be headed to their fourth overtime contest of the season, when Reid stepped up to provide the winner at the 86:25 mark.
The statistics backed up the score line, as the Cyclones held a 19-5 shots advantage and a 9-2 shots-on-goal edge. ISU had four corner kicks to Western Illinois' one.
“It was good to get a win playing a player down,” Dillinger said. “When Jordan got sent off we stepped up our energy and rallied around each other. We showed urgency to score and refused to lose.”
The match also never saw Iowa State fall behind. The Cyclones have not trailed in any match this season.
Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the entire 90 minutes. The Stillwater, Minn., native made one save and recorded the win. Gleason's season mark improved to 4-0-3.
Iowa State heads to Iowa City to battle in-state rival Iowa on Friday. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. and is part of the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.
