AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State swimming and diving team was able to capture just one victory in the first 13 events to fall to the No. 21 Missouri Tigers, 190-105, at Beyer Pool Saturday.
“It is a good eye-opener for them,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “There are a lot of little things in practice which they have to work on and our swimmers have not been focusing on and those became glaring mistakes today. It was good for that to happen at a meet like this and hopefully we will learn from it for next week.”
Iowa State got the meet started off on the right foot with the team of Nan Liu, Jeli Nixt, Abby Glaser and Lindsey Behrens taking the 200 medley relay in 1:44.51. However, the Cyclones dropped the next six races going into the first diving break. ISU didn't take a swimming event until the 200 IM, with Taylor Vieau claiming first.
“We need better intensity,” Sorenson said. “I thought our intensity was poor today.”
On the diving boards, Tien Tran led the Cyclone divers on 1-meter with a second-place finish with 273.44. It was the first time Tran didn't win a diving event in a dual meet since the Illinois meet in October. Abby Christensen finished fourth (241.19). Tran went on to win 3-meter with a score of 304.35.
“Tien really came out well on 1-meter,” Iowa State diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “She did really well today and I have no complaints. I have seen her a little sharper here and there. On 3-meter, she stepped it up getting over the 300 mark which was good to see. She is doing well in practice and it showed today.”
Sophomore and Ames native Lauren Naeve put up a career-high score of 253.42 on the 3-meter.
“Lauren had a great meet up there,” Warrick said. “It shows that she has the ability to do that day in and day out, sometimes is just takes a while. She wasn't off a little today and it added up for her in a positive way.”
The Cyclones travel to Nebraska for a pair of dual meets next weekend. On Friday night, ISU will face Nebraska-Omaha at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Iowa State takes on Big 12 foe Nebraska at 1 p.m.
