MANHATTAN, Kan. ? The 18th-ranked Iowa State women's basketball team trailed by two points with 5:45 to go in the contest, but Kansas State responded with a 7-0 run that pushed them to a 73-67 win Sunday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. The loss snapped a four-game win streak by the Cyclones and was KSU's first win in its last four contests.
The Cyclones dropped to 16-4 overall and 4-3 in the Big 12, while Kansas State improved to 11-9 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Kelsey Bolte led the way for the Cyclones with 19 points, as four ISU players finished in double figures. Alison Lacey had 13 points to move into sixth place on the Iowa State career scoring chart with 1,503 points. She posted her sixth double-double of the season with 10 assists. Anna Prins and Denae Stuckey each had 10 points. Stuckey led the Cyclones on the glass with seven rebounds. Kansas State had three players in double figures, led by Ashley Sweat's 31 points. She was 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Iowa State shot 48.3 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc. Kansas State shot 49 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from three-point range, going 8-for-14. The Cyclones narrowly won the rebounding edge, 30-28, and earned 19 assists on 28 field goals. The Wildcats outscored the Cyclones by 10 at the free throw line.
The Wildcats took a 29-27 lead into the locker room after a half that was tight from start to finish. The first half saw seven ties and the largest lead was five by KSU eight minutes into the game. Lacey and Sweat each had 11 points at the break to lead their respective teams.
Iowa State shot 41.4 percent from the field, but KSU held the Cyclones without a three-pointer over the first 20 minutes. The Wildcats shot 44.8 percent from the floor and were 3-of-6 from outside the arc. ISU outrebounded Kansas State, 17-16. The Cyclones committed seven turnovers in the first half.
The two teams traded baskets until Kansas State got back-to-back field goals to tie the game at 8-all. The Wildcats hit a field goal in the midst of a 7-2 run as they took a 15-10 advantage. Lacey hit a shot to tie the game back up at 19-all and she scored again to draw within one, 24-23. Sweat nailed a three-pointer off a KSU offensive rebound with 10.5 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 29-25 lead, but Jessica Schroll scored on an inbounds play at the buzzer to cut KSU's margin to two at the break.
Prins drained a three-pointer to close within one, 31-30, at the beginning of the second half, but the Wildcats answered with a trey by Taelor Karr. The teams went back to trading scores over the next three minutes. Kansas State got consecutive baskets and a pair of free throws to take a 42-34 lead, while holding the Cyclones without a score for four and a half minutes.
Iowa State cut the margin to five, 47-42, on a layup by Stuckey with 8:45 left, but Brittany Chambers got a lucky bounce on a three-pointer to push the Wildcats back out by eight. Bolte returned the favor, getting a three to fall on the second bounce, Prins scored inside and then Stuckey hit a three-pointer to get ISU back to within two points, 52-50, but Kansas State responded with a 7-0 run to take a 59-50 lead with 3:49 remaining.
Chassidy Cole hit a three-pointer, 59-53, with 2:37 to go and the Cyclones began to foul. Kansas State began knocking them down, scoring its final 11 points from the charity stripe.
The Cyclones will next play host to the Texas Tech Lady Raiders at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum.
