Meet ResultsAMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team took all but one event Wednesday night as they knocked off the Northern Iowa Panthers 147-88 at Beyer Pool. The win improves Iowa State's dual meet record to 5-1 on the season.
“We are getting the squad ready for the Northwestern Invitational,” Iowa State head coach
Duane Sorenson said. “We had two very difficult practices Monday and Tuesday so we made this meet part of our training cycle and our women did a great job.”
Elena Carvell led the Cyclones on the night. The sophomore was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams and picked up a win in the 200 butterfly, stopping the clock at 2:11.44. It was the first time Carvell swam the 200 fly at Iowa State.
“We wanted to see what she could do in the 200 fly,” Sorenson stated. “She did a fantastic job going 2:11. There could be a future for her in that race but it will help her 100 fly out more than anything else.”
Meredith Doran also posted a good meet, earning a win in the 200 free and being a member of the 400 free relay team.
“She did great,” Sorenson said. “Her 200 free was not too far off her lifetime best and then she had the fastest split in the 400 free relay. She has been training hard and all of it is paying off.”
Iowa State got the meet started off in a strong fashion, winning the first three events of the meet. The 200 medley relay team of
Dani Harris, Emily Wiltise, Carvell and
Sarah Norris touched the wall first in 1:49.42.
Jenny Vondenkamp took the first distance race of the evening, taking a wire-to-wire victory in the 1000 free in 10:32.27. Harris posted her second victory of the night in the 200 IM, going 2:12.34.
Kalyn Amundsen posted an individual victory in the 100 free going 54.53. Vondenkamp picked up her second victory of the evening in the 200 back. It was the first time the senior swam the event, finishing in a time of 2:10.82.
Megan Thompson collected a win in the 500 free, touching the wall first in 5:14.50. Freshman
Emily Wiltsie continued her strong start to her Iowa State career, picking up the win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.00.
The Cyclones finished the night with the team of Amundsen, Carvell, Doran and
Alex Gustafson winning the 400 free relay in 3:38.01.
In the diving well,
Abby Christensen paced the Cyclones on 1-meter with her score of 251.25. The competition on 1-meter continued to be fierce for the Cyclones as
Lauren Naeve came in second with a score of 250.35 and
Sarah Nelson third with a 249.07.
“I thought they did well,” diving coach
Jeff Warrick said. “We were maybe not as sharp as we had been but our top three were within three points of each other. They were very competitive with each other and now we just need to become more sharp on our dives.”
On 3-meter,
Jenn Botsch came back strongly after missing the double-dual meet with South Dakota State and Western Illinois. Botsch dueled with Northern Iowa's Bethany Olson and in the end edged her out with a score of 265.65 to Olson's 264.83.
“I was very happy with how she did,” Warrick noted. “She didn't dive yesterday and she was not feeling well today. We almost pulled her on 3-meter but she said she could make it and once she settled down she did a great job.”
The Cyclones hit the road Nov. 19-21 as they compete in the Northwestern Invitational.
