AMES, Iowa- Iowa State ended the first half on a 27-11 run to break open a close game en route to a 74-47 win over Alabama State Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 0-2.
With Iowa State clinging to a 14-11 lead, Jake Anderson converted back-to-back lay-ups and Scott Christopherson made a couple of 3-pointers to kickstart the Cyclones after a sluggish start.
The Cyclones coasted the rest of the way.
Christopherson finished the game with 15 points, recording his 14th double-digit scoring performance of his career. Jamie Vanderbeken popped in two 3-pointers to help the Cyclones make six in the game. Vanderbeken is now Iowa State's all-time current leader in career 3-point percentage. The Cyclone big man has hit 43.6 percent of his 3-pointers in his career (51-117 3FG). He is 8-of-15 from 3-point range on the season.
Diante Garrett added 13 points and five assists. The Cyclone senior notched four steals to give him 103 in his career. ISU had 11 thefts in the game.
Freshman Melvin Ejim was solid in his second career start, recording 15 points and nine rebounds. Anderson chipped in with 10 points and had a team-high 12 rebounds to record his first double-double with the Cyclones.
The Cyclones held Alabama State to 27.1 percent shooting from the floor, while the home team connected on 48.1 percent of its shots. It was the 19th-lowest shooting percentage by a Cyclone opponent in school history.
Iowa State is back in action on Wednesday, playing host to Drake at 7 p.m.
