ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - No. 10 West Virginia held a 40-22 edge in rebounds and hit 10-of-25 3-pointers to defeat 17th-ranked Iowa State, 64-53, Saturday afternoon at the Paradise Jam. The loss, Iowa State's first of the season, drops the Cyclones to 5-1 overall. West Virginia improves to 6-0.
The Mountaineers held an advantage on the boards, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. West Virginia entered the game shooting 29.3 percent from behind the arc, but came out firing with a season-high 10 3-pointers, including three in the first half from Taylor Palmer, who had just four coming into the game.
The Cyclones were led by Kelsey Bolte's 13 points and Chelsea Poppens' 10. Hallie Christofferson was the leading rebounder for the Cyclones with five boards to go along with eight points. Lauren Mansfield scored seven points and dished out seven assists in the losing effort.
In the second half, West Virginia built the lead to 18 points with 14:35 remaining, but the Cyclones kept battling, trimming the lead to 10 with 10:45 remaining on a pair of Lauren Mansfield free throws. The Mountaineers were too much, however, going on to win by 11 points and claim the tournament championship.
Iowa State put itself in an early hole, allowing West Virginia to grab 11 first half offensive rebounds and score 13 second chance points. The Cyclones tied it at 8-8 on a layup by Prins, who had seven points in the opening period, but West Virginia went on an 8-2 run to get some breathing room. The Mountaineers would push their lead to as many as 12 with 3:53 left in the half.
ISU had trimmed the deficit to seven points on a Jessica Schroll steal and layup with 14 seconds left, but West Virginia's Palmer hit her third trifecta of the half to extend the lead back to 10 points (36-26).
West Virginia was paced by Liz Repella, who scored 15 points, and Madina Ali's 13 points and nine rebounds.
