IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 16 Iowa State women's basketball team had rough starts to both halves Thursday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena as the Cyclones fell 62-40 to the No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes. The loss drops Iowa State to 6-2 on the season.
Iowa State was led on the night by Lauren Mansifeld's 16 points.
Kelsey Bolte chipped in eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Iowa (9-1) had three players in double figures led by Morgan Johnson's 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kelly Krei added 15 points and Kachine Alexander tallied 13.
Iowa State was cold from the field during the game, shooting 32.6 percent (14-43), including 4-18 in the second half. The Cyclones could not get rolling from deep either, going 2-9. Iowa State was dominated on the glass, with the Hawkeyes holding a 40-27 edge on the boards.
The outcome was decided in the first 10 minutes of the second half as the Hawkeyes went on a 17-6 run to expand a 26-21 halftime lead to a 43-27 advantage. Iowa State came out of the locker room cold, shooting 1-8 from the field and committing eight turnovers during the stretch. The Iowa lead got up to 24 when a Krei three made it 60-36.
Iowa State was up 6-5 early on but Kamille Wahlin's three out of the first official's timeout sparked a 17-2 run to make it 22-8 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Amanda Zimmerman stepped up to contribute five quick points to reduce the deficit to 22-13 and help get the Cyclones back on track. Iowa State built a 13-4 run from the 22-8 deficit to make it 26-21 at the half.
Mansfield was the star in the first half with 10 points on 5-8 shooting from the field. Iowa spread its scoring out well in the first half with Wahlin leading the way with seven. Johnson and Krei contributed six each and Alexander added five.
The Cyclones are back home this Sunday for a home game against Columbia. Tip is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
