IRVING, Texas?Iowa State senior gymnast Melanie Tham was named to the 2010 Spring Chick-fil-A Community of Champions team by the Big 12 Conference Wednesday.
During the fall, winter and spring terms, one student-athlete from each Big 12 institution receives the honor based on academics, community service and leadership/sportsmanship.
“I am honored and very grateful to receive the award,” Tham said. “It is great to represent Iowa State University and the gymnastics team by winning this award.”
The Mississauga, Ontario native is the co-president of the ISU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and boasts a 3.70 cumulative grade-point average.
“Melanie is very special because she cares very much about other people,” Iowa State gymnastics coach Jay Ronayne said. “Her community service comes from her love for other people, not for the betterment of herself. She exemplifies the fine character and dedication we would like all our student-athletes to show.”
