WATERLOO, Iowa—The Iowa State soccer team scored three goals in the final 18 minutes Sunday afternoon to earn a 3-1 victory over Northern Iowa at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
Making her second collegiate appearance, freshman Emily Goldstein scored Iowa State's first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give the Cyclones the 1-0 lead. Fellow freshman Meredith Skitt assisted on the goal.
The Panthers quickly responded with a goal off a penalty kick at the 75:25 mark to knot the game at one.
“We played okay the first half,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “I think our inexperience played a role in not finishing the chances we created in the first half. The urgency and intensity really stepped up after (Northern Iowa) scored on a penalty kick.”
For the second consecutive match against Northern Iowa (0-1-0), Mary Kate McLaughlin scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native gave Iowa State (1-0-1) a 2-1 lead 80:19 into the match. McLaughlin scored a sudden-victory goal over the Panthers on Oct. 4, 2009.
Goldstein added to her impressive game by assisting McLaughlin's goal, giving the Orange County, Calif., native three points for the match.
“Emily is such a smart player,” Dillinger said. “She's fast and reads the game well. Her vision and creativity really sparked out offense today.”
Freshman Theresa Kucera gave Iowa State an insurance goal in the 86th minute.
For the match, Iowa State outshot Northern Iowa 20-5. The Cyclones also had nine shots on goal to the Panthers' four. Iowa State had a 5-1 edge on corner kicks.
The Cyclones split duty in goal, with senior Ashley Costanzo playing the opening 45 minutes. Freshman Maddie Jobe finished the game and was credited with the win. Jobe's season record is 1-0. Costanzo recorded three saves, while Jobe did not make a stop.
The Cyclones return to action Friday against Montana at 7 p.m. in Missoula, Mont. The match will be the first of two games for Iowa State in the University of Montana Tournament.
