WATERLOO, Iowa - The second tournament for Iowa State's fall tennis season kicked off today with four student-athletes making the trip to Waterloo for competition at the UNI Fall Invitational. Jenna Langhorst, Emma Waites, Nikki Reber and Ellie Nixon represented ISU at the tournament, joining competitors from Bradley, Drake, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Northern Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, South Dakota State and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Sophomore Jenna Langhorst fell to North Dakota's Erin Kappers in first round singles play by scores of 6-2, 6-7 and 6-3. Ellie Nixon, a freshman, had a bye in the opening round and went on to defeat Mary Ellen Donovan of UW-Milwaukee, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round.
Langhorst and Nixon's eammate Emma Waites, also a rookie, defeated Manon Dennis of Northern Illinois, 6-3, 6-3, in first round play before disposing of Minnesota's Ellie Kantar 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. Cyclone sophomore Nikki Reber won her first round against UWM's Kristin Kurer 5-7, 6-2, 7-6. Reber then faced Bradley's Meredith McDonagh and defeated the Brave 6-0, 6-1.
“The extra week of practice really paid off,” Iowa State assistant coach Chris Williams said. “The girls are doing all the things we've been working on as individuals in practice, so I couldn't be happier with where we are right now.”
Doubles competition led to one Cyclone pairs advancement to the second round.
Langhorst and Reber defeated Minnesota's Mariana Spilka and Emilie Renault 8-5 in first round doubles before losing to Iowa's Lynn Poggensee-Wei and Sonja Molnar 8-4 in the second round.
ISU's Nixon and Waites had a bye in their first round doubles match and lost to Northern Iowa's Jessica Kunzelmann and Chelsea Moore 8-4.
“Regardless of who you play and where you play, if you win, everybody feels more confident," Williams said. "I was happy we got a win over Minnesota, they are a good team. We're feeling pretty successful.”
Singles and doubles play will continue Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Byrnes Park in Waterloo, and commences Sunday afternoon.
