AMES, Iowa? The No. 21 Iowa State gymnastics team posted a 195.250-194.550 Big 12 Conference win over Missouri Friday night at the Beauty and the Beast event in front of an announced crowd of 5,970 in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclone wrestlers did not fare as well, dropping a 33-7 decision over Oklahoma.
Iowa State's team score was its highest of the 2011 campaign and improved the Cyclones to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12.
Cyclones Shea Anderson (vault ? 9.850), Jody McKellar (bars ? 9.900), Michelle Shealy (beam ? 9.875) Michelle Browning (floor ? 9.800) all earned event titles. The Tigers' Lauren Swankoski and Mary Burke tied Browning for the floor title. Burke also took home the all-around title with a score of 39.200.
Iowa State posted its best team score of the season by .525 of a point and delivered a dynamic 49.150 score on bars.
“Improving each week is how we have scripted the season,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “It feels great to have a win against Missouri because they finished 12th in the country last season and Big 12 wins are hard to come by.”
McKellar's career-high-tying 9.900 on bars earned her the meet's “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” which goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
“Jody was awesome tonight,” Ronayne said. “Her bars routine was something special, but we know she can do better than that.”
Ronayne was also pleased with his team's performance in front of the second-largest crowd to ever watch a Cyclone home gymnastics meet.
“(The gymnasts) love it,” Ronayne said. “We tell them this is going to be something very exciting, and this was an amazing event.”
The Cyclones hit the road for the first time in their next meet when they travel to Provo, Utah for a four-team competition. Iowa State will face Southern Utah, Brigham Young and Utah State at the meet that starts at 1 p.m. CST on Jan. 29.
