PROVO, Utah?The No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team rallied on its final rotation with a 49.200 on bars, its highest score on any event this season, to secure a tie for top honors at a four-team competition Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cyclones' score of 194.925 tied them with Brigham Young and gave Iowa State wins over No. 16 Southern Utah (194.275) and Utah State (191.900).
“Coming into the meet we were ranked ninth in the country on bars, and I feel we put together a performance today that shows we are even better,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “The sense of confidence the team had going into bars as our last event is exactly how we need approach every event. Each week we get a little closer to that goal.
“Knowing we were in third place going into our last rotation, it shows great character from the team to finish with such an outstanding performance on bars,” Ronayne said.
Iowa State's Michelle Browning and Michelle Shealy tied for top honors in the all-around with scores of 39.100. Also earning event titles for the Cyclones were Alex Grant, Jody McKellar and Browning who all tied for the bars title. The Iowa State trio tied with Utah State's Nicole Simoneau for the top bars honors.
“The Michelles are a vital part of our team score, and any time they can put up a winning performance our team is in a great position to be successful,” Ronayne said.
Rounding out event titles were: Southern Utah's Ari Lamb (beam ? 9.925), BYU's Haylee Rollins and Southern Utah's Lindsey Schultz (floor ? 9.875) and Schultz also won the vault crown with a 9.750.
The Cyclones' season record improved to 4-1-1.
The tie between the Cyclones and the Cougars marked the fourth draw in Iowa State gymnastics history. Iowa State's last tie came against Oklahoma at the 2007 NCAA North Central Regional.
The Cyclones travel to Raleigh, N.C. Feb. 4 for their next competition where they will face North Carolina State and George Washington in a triangular meet. The competition is slated to begin at 6 p.m. CST.
