Cyclones Push Forward at KU Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State tennis continued to move ahead today during the Kansas Invitational's second day of duals.
Three Cyclone student-athletes will play for tournament championship titles tomorrow. Rookie Ksenia Pronina quickly ousted UMKC's Laura Bouet in second round singles, closing out her competition 6-2, 6-0. Jenna Langhorst defeated Ariel Beckerman of Indiana 6-4, 6-2, and her teammate Meghan Cassens won over Kansas State's Petra Chuda 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 this afternoon. All three athletes have one match standing between them and a first-place title.
“The girls did a great job in singles today,” Cyclone head coach Armando Espinosa said. “They've really worked on expanding the court and moving the ball around, and overall getting better results for themselves.”
Senior Marie-Christine Chartier advanced in consolation play by default this afternoon, and the senior will face Brittney Reed of ACU in tomorrow's final. Emma Waites and Chelsea Loprinzi will also advance to the championship rounds Sunday for singles in their respective consolation brackets.
Caroline Andersen, an Iowa State freshman who fell to Missouri's Tina Radan today, will face UMKC's Jessica Ball to fight for third place.
The Cyclones made a few changes to their doubles lineups, with the duo of Andersen and Chartier defeated Eva Dalvai and Laura Bouet of UMKC 8-6. The team was overtaken by Olga Fisher and Rocio Diaz from Missouri 8-3.
Maria Macedo had her first round of consolation play at the ITA Regionals, but the senior could not advance after the first match. She fell 6-4, 6-4 to Tulsa's Michelle Farley, ending her stint at the national tournament.
The Kansas Invitational will wrap up tomorrow with championship matches in both singles and doubles.
