NORMAN, Okla. - Outside hitter Carly Jenson had 25 kills and 16 digs as No. 13 Iowa State (18-4, 9-2 Big 12) defeated No. 25 Oklahoma (19-7, 6-4) in four sets Wednesday, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21. Iowa State is the only team to beat the Sooners at home this season.
Jenson came one kill short of her career-best 26 kills she posted earlier this season against Northern Illinois. The senior was responsible for 26.5 of the Cyclones points against the Sooners.
Junior setter Alison Landwehr collected a career-high 64 assists on the night, the most assists by a Cyclone since Landwehr's 62-assist performance in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament against Creighton last season. The Creighton match went five sets.
Middle blockers Jamie Straube and Tenisha Matlock contributed big games as Straube posted 16 kills and three blocks and Matlock connected for eight kills while picking up four blocks. Freshman Victoria Hurtt came off the bench for nine kills including four in third set.
Iowa State lit up the court in set one, hitting .421 in behind seven kills from Jenson. The Sooners' only lead of the set came at 1-0 before the Cyclones took control and drove to the 25-18 win.
Oklahoma was not to be quieted in set two, coming out strong and building a 20-14 lead before Iowa State rallied to tie the score at 21. The Sooners finished off the win with a kill from Keila Rodriguez to even the match at one set apiece.
It was the Cyclones again in set three as the visitors pulled ahead 8-4 before OU closed in, down 14-13. Straube, who scored five kills in the game, and the Cyclones stayed strong, taking the 2-1 lead on a Matlock kill.
The Cyclones are back on the court Saturday afternoon, playing Texas Tech at 4 p.m. CDT at Hilton Coliseum. General admission is $2 for fans with an Iowa State-Kansas football ticket stub.
