RENO, Nev. - Iowa State got a career-high 15 points from freshman guard Brynn Williamson but was unable to overcome No. 17 Penn State Friday afternoon, falling to the Nittany Lions, 66-59, in action at the Nugget Classic. The Cyclones fall to 3-1 this season, while Penn State moves to 4-1.
The Cyclones trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half but were able to cut the deficit to just two points (55-53) with 5:28 remaining following a Hallie Christofferson free throw.
The Nittany Lions responded with a layup from Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year Alex Bentley to increase their lead back to four points before Jessica Schroll put in two of her seven points to again reduce the PSU lead to two.
That was all the closer the Cyclones would get, however, as Penn State used a 7-0 run to put the game away.
The Cyclones trailed by nine at the half after Penn State went on a 5-0 run to end the opening stanza. Chelsea Poppens hit a pair of free throws with 1:03 left in the half to make it 32-28 Penn State but Tori Waldner scored in the paint and Bentley drilled a three with just seven seconds left to increase the lead to nine at the break.
The Cyclones were hurt by poor shooting at the free throw line. As a team, Iowa State shot just 19-for-35 at the charity stripe, including 12-for-24 in the opening half.
Williamson hit a career-best four three-pointers en route to her career high. Poppens posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 17 rebounds.
Maggie Lucas led Penn State with 18 points, while Zhaque Gray (14) and Bentley (13) were also in double figures. Mia Nickson grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Nittany Lions on the glass.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday at 7 p.m. (CST) against Butler.
