AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head gymnastics coach Jay Ronayne announced the signing of national letters of intent by four gymnasts Wednesday to attend and compete for the Cyclones in the 2012-13 academic year.
Kristen DeCosta (Dallas, Texas), Sammie Pearsall (La Grange, Ill.), Annie Glasenapp (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Erin Lewallen (Houston, Texas) are headed to Ames.
"I am very excited about this class," Ronayne said. "They all have distinctive styles and personalities that I know our fans will really enjoy watching. They will bring a balance of power and grace that will keep us competitive on a national scale."
Pearsall has been at the Illinois Gymnastics Institute for 12 years under the tutelage of coach Todd Gardiner. At the 2011 Junior Olympic National Championships Pearsall tied for first on beam, sixth in the all-around and tied for seventh on bars. Pearsall also took seventh on bars at the 2010 Junior Olympic Championships. Pearsall has been on the Lyons Township Honor Roll all four years and was also selected as a member of the National Italian Honors Society.
"Sammie doesn't have a weak event, she is strong on all four events," Ronayne said. "I see her adding quality depth to our team immediately."
DeCosta joins Iowa State after being a member of Metroplex Gymnastics the past 12 years. She has been coached by Marnie Futch and Gina Logan while at Metroplex. DeCosta is coming off a 2011 season in which she placed fifth on floor at the Texas State Level 10 Championships and 10th in the all-around at the competition. In 2010, DeCosta placed fifth on vault and 10th in the all-around at the Junior Olympic National Invitational Tournament. In 2009, she took second in the all-around at the Region 3 Championships. At the high school level, DeCosta was part of the 2010 Texas state championship squad. DeCosta is as impressive in the classroom as she is in the gym. The National Honor Society member boasts a 3.975 grade-point average, is in the top four percent of her graduating class and was named a National Hispanic Scholar.
"Kristen's strength is on bars, and she is determined to make a mark on the NCAA scene on that event," Ronayne said "She is a solid all-arounder but her passion for and talent on bars is what the fans should keep their eyes on."
Glasenapp has trained for coaches Bart and Lori Roskoski and Jean Juneski at Flips Gymnastics for the past 10 years. Glasenapp has qualified to the 2010 and 2011 Junior Olympic National Championships. This past April, she placed third on vault, second on bars, second on beam, tied for first on floor and placed second in the all-around at the Region 4 Level 10 championships. She also took first on beam and third in the all-around at the same competition in 2010. Glasenapp has been a member of the Mahtomedi High School honor roll throughout her four years there.
"Annie reminds me a lot of Michelle Shealy; she is very strong and powerful," Ronayne said. "I see her helping us out as an all-arounder but especially on vault."
Houston, Texas, native Erin Lewallen comes to Iowa State after training at Champion Gymnastics with Kellie Mizoguchi. Kellie also trained Cyclone standout Michelle Browning at Champion Gymnastics. Due to injuries, Lewallen has not competed at the Junior Olympic National Championships since 2009. In 2009, Lewallen placed third on bars and sixth in the all-around at the Region 3 Championships.
"Erin missed out on competing at the last couple of Junior Olympic National Championships due to some untimely injuries, so she has been off the radar for a lot of programs," Ronayne said. "I feel she will be an excellent collegiate gymnast within her time here at Iowa State."
