LAWRENCE, Kan.- Marcus and Markieff Morris combined for 30 points and 22 rebounds, as No. 2 Kansas downed Iowa State, 89-66 Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. Marcus picked up a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
Iowa State, which falls to 14-11 overall and 1-9 in Big 12 play, was led by Scott Christopherson, who poured in 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Kansas held a slim 10-8 lead in the early moments until blowing the game open with a 23-4 run over the next 10 minutes of the first half. The Jayhawks went into the break with a 45-26 lead, making 56 percent from the field in the opening stanza.
"We talked about getting out to a good start, taking care of the ball and getting back in transition as keys for us," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We did not do a good enough job early on getting stops and we turned the ball over too much, and that really hurt us."
KU's lead never got higher than 26 points in the second half thanks to ISU's shooting from long range. Christopherson, Diante Garrett and Jake Anderson combined for 12 3-pointers to help the Cyclones connect on 14 for the game, one shy from the single-game school record of 15 (vs. UW-Milwaukee in 2008). It was the 11th time this season where the Cyclones made 10 or more 3-pointers in a game.
Jamie Vanderbeken was active early, scoring seven points until coming out of the game in the middle of the first half with an ankle sprain. He did not return and his status is uncertain for the Cyclones' next game.
"Jamie was in there fighting and was giving us a lot effort before he went out," Hoiberg said.
Christopherson tied history in the contest. The Cyclone junior made four 3-pointers, giving him a 3-pointer in 27 consecutive games, which ties a school mark for most consecutive games with a made 3-pointer with Mike Taylor (2006-07).
Iowa State travels to Texas A&M on Wednesday (Feb. 16). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
