AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's basketball team had four players in double digit points, including freshman Calvin Godfrey's career-high 13 points, but the Cyclones were unable to pull ahead of No. 20 Missouri, falling, 76-70 in front of 12,691 at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday. The loss drops Iowa State to 14-13 overall and 1-11 in Big 12 play this season. Missouri improves to 21-6 and 7-5 in conference play with its first conference road win of the season.
Godfrey added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double performance while Jake Anderson led the Cyclones with 17 points in the game. Scott Christopherson and Diante Garrett had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Cyclones won the turnover battle with Missouri, only the third team this season to do so, forcing 16 Tiger turnovers and committing 14 of their own as both teams had 16 points off turnovers.
Although Mizzou out-rebounded Iowa State by eight (39-31), the Cyclones' 13 offensive boards gave way to 17 second-chance points to keep the game close throughout.
The toughest challenge for the Cyclones came in trying to contain the Tigers' leading scorer, Marcus Denmon. Denmon, who was held to 13 points when Iowa State visited Columbia, Mo., last month, exploded for 25 points on Saturday.
Missouri's Ricardo Ratliffe posted his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds and forward Lawrence Bowers added 16 for the visiting team.
Iowa State connected on six 3-pointers, giving the Cyclones a team-record 239 long-range efforts this season.
The Cyclones trailed by two at the half, 35-33, in large part because of winning the first-half turnover battle with the Tigers. Iowa State forced 12 Mizzou turnovers in the first 20 minutes while committing only seven of its own.
Missouri appeared ready to take control early in the first half, leading 21-9 at one point but Jordan Railey's first basket of the day, followed quickly by Melvin Ejim's 19th dunk of the year started a 24-14 run by the Cyclones to close the gap.
Denmon led all scorers at the break with 17 points, followed by Iowa State's Anderson who had 12.
The Cyclones have a three day window before traveling to Texas on Tuesday night, Feb. 22, to face the Longhorns at 7 p.m. CST.
