IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 22 Iowa State gymnastics team fell to No. 15 Iowa in a Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series matchup Friday night. The Hawkeyes edged past the Cyclones 195.450-195.200 in the University of Iowa Field House.
The Cyclones' team score was the highest at an away meet this season.
"We fought very well on three events, but it takes four," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "This will help us in the national ranking which is very important to us. We have to take it and run with it. We have to learn from it."
Cyclone junior Michelle Browning won the vault competition with a score of 9.825. Iowa State (7-4-1) freshman Camille Santerre-Gervais walked away with the bars title after posting a score of 9.900, which tied career-high for the St.-Lazare, Quebec native. Iowa's Rebecca Simbhudas won the all-around title with a score of 39.325 and also won the balance beam event with a 9.900 on the apparatus. Iowa (6-5) gymnast Jessa Hansen won floor with a 9.950.
Friday night proved to be a high-scoring meet for Cyclone junior Celine Paulus. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native notched two season-high scores and one career-high against the Hawkeyes. Paulus posted a 9.800 on vault (season high), a 9.850 on floor (season high) and a 9.875 on balance beam (career high) in the final rotation.
"[Celine] looked really confident all night from the moment we walked in, all the way through to the end of the meet," Ronayne said. "She looked very confident and that's what I expect from her all the time. I've seen glimpses of it here and there but it was really cool to see it today.”
In the final rotation Hailey Johnson scored a career-high 9.875 on balance beam.
Iowa State will play host to Minnesota Friday, March 4 in Hilton Coliseum. The final home contest for Iowa State is set to begin at 7 p.m. CST.
