AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Diante Garrett and Scott Christopherson scored over 23 and 22 points, respectively, but couldn't pull the Cyclones (14-10, 1-8 Big 12) past Kansas State (16-8, 3-5 Big 12) as the Wildcats edged out the 86-85 victory at Hilton Coliseum.
Saturday marked the third time this season that two Cyclones have posted 20 or more points in a game.
It was a stellar day for the Cyclones on offense as the team hit 56 percent of its shots and made 22 of 24 free throws. Forward Jamie Vanderbeken recorded 18 points for the Cyclones and hit two huge treys in the second half to give Iowa State a shot before Jacob Pullen drove to the basket for the game-winning layup with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation.
Pullen, held to four points in the first half, led Kansas State with 21 on the day and was one of four Wildcats in double figures. Iowa State couldn't stop the Wildcats from beyond the arc and the visitors from Manhattan sunk 14 3-pointers to count almost half their final score.
In the first half, Iowa State hit 60 percent of its shots and Kansas State scored over 50 percent from the field, including seven 3-pointers.
The Cyclones hit all seven of their free throws in the first 20 minutes to stay within four, down 44-40 at the break.
Garrett led all scorers with 14 at the half while Will Spradling added 11 for the Wildcats. Jamie Vanderbeken was the third player in double figures with 10 before halftime.
The Cyclones take a week-long break before traveling to Kansas next Saturday, Feb. 12, for a 3 p.m. tip in Lawrence, Kan.
