CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Senior Rachel Zabriskie tied the Iowa State record for complete games with 78 and freshman Anna Cole hit the first home run of her career but the Northern Iowa Panthers (18-13) defeated the Cyclones (15-10, 1-1 Big 12), 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Shut down by Panther's ace Jaye Hutcheson (4-8) from start to finish, Iowa State managed only two runs on three hits on the day. Cole's four-bagger tacked on the final run for the Cyclones after Heidi Kidwell drove Cole in on a single in the third inning. Kidwell's single extended her hitting streak to seven games.
Zabriskie struck out four in her six innings of work but gave up four hits including two home runs to fall to 9-6 this season. After Rachel Gerking scored on an error by Cole in the first, catcher Courtney Dunker smashed an offering by Zabriskie for a two-run shot that put the Panthers up, 3-0. Dunker is UNI's home run leader with eight long balls this year.
Kidwell's RBI in the third put the Cyclones within two but Mackenzie Daigh stretched the UNI lead back to three with a two-out homer in the fifth.
On Thursday, the Cyclones host a make-up doubleheader with Creighton at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Game one is slated for 2 p.m. with game two to follow at 4 p.m. Both times CDT.
