AMES, Iowa - Sept. 17 was National Gymnastics Day, and the Cyclone gymnasts held a successful event at their practice gym in Beyer Hall to help celebrate the annual occasion.
National Gymnastics Day was created in 2001 to help support the sport and raise money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Nearly $1.5 million has been raised since the event's inception.
The free event put on by the Cyclones drew a crowd of over 120, with nearly 70 participating in shattering the world record for most individuals doing a handstand simultaneously. A record 20,478 gymnasts from across the country took part in the new hand-stand mark. The previous record was 2,402 set in 2005 by Australian gymnasts.
Fans who attended the event put on by the Iowa State gymnastics team were additionally able to receive autographs from the Cyclones, participate in dancing with the gymnasts and have the opportunity for open gym.
