AMES, Iowa - Natalie Vondrak, a middle blocker from Sioux City, Iowa, had a career year at Bishop Heelan in 2011, averaging 4.22 kills per set and 3.54 digs per set and recording 24 kills in the Crusaders' loss to Waverly-Shell Rock in the state championship match. A three-time all-state selection, Vondrak was named to the state all-tournament team, along with 2012 teammate Morgan Kuhrt.
"We've been watching [Natalie] for a few years now," head Cyclones coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "She's played middle but she's also played some outside and she can pass and play all the way around. She's the kind of player that understands the game well enough where she's just going to beat you with being smart, being crafty and being aggressive. I've really been impressed with her."
After averaging a career-high 0.94 blocks per set as a sophomore in 2009, Vondrak continued to grow, earning Catholic Youth Organization All-Tournament honors in 2010 and leading Heelan to the CYO championship in 2011.
Not content only to standout on the volleyball court, Vondrak has made her mark on the Heelan basketball court as well as a four-year starter and two-time all-district selection. Vondrak's success on the basketball court was recently profiled by Sioux City's KTVI (seen here).
Having turned down offers from five other schools including Creighton, Vondrak plans to major in history at Iowa State.
