AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team completed its preseason with its final intrasquad Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones split into two teams for the event, and the Gold team came out victorious 9-7.
The format for the event pitted members of the Cardinal and Gold team competing head to head with a panel of celebrity judges awarding a point to the superior performance.
"I am pleased with how they handled the new environment and nerves tonight," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "There was a good crowd, which some of the freshmen were a little worried about. They didn't handle it great at first, but they were able to regroup and gain their nerves. They did a great job after that."
Ronayne also felt the team accomplished its goals for the night.
"We accomplished what we set out here to do tonight," he said. "We wanted to get used to equipment, get the young ones acclimated to college gymnastics and get used to competing in this type of environment. I am really happy with how everything went tonight."
The two teams started on vault. Competing on the apparatus for the Gold team were: Alex Marasco, Sara Townsend, Henrietta Green and Hailey Johnson. Sammie Pearsall, Megan McDonald Elizabeth Stranahan and Caitlin Brown represented the Cardinal team on vault.
The Cyclones competed on bars for the second rotation. Brown, Stranahan, Michelle Shealy and McDonald competed on bars for the Cardinal team. The Gold team's bars lineup was: Townsend, Johnson, Green and Camille Santerre-Gervais.
Beam served as the third apparatus the two teams competed on. Marasco, Santerre-Gervais, Green and Johnson were the beam workers for the Gold team. Pearsall, Stranahan, Brown and Shealy represented the Cardinal team on beam.
The evening concluded with the two teams going head to head on floor. The Gold team's floor lineup was: Santerre-Gervais and Townsend. Shealy, Pearsall and Brown competed on floor for the Cardinal squad.
Iowa State opens its regular season Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. CT against Wisconsin-La Crosse in Hilton Coliseum.
