DENVER, Colo. - Iowa State senior gymnast Celine Paulus scored 9.950 on vault to tie for the fourth-highest tally on the apparatus in Cyclone history in a three-team meet Saturday night inside Hamilton Gymnasium. In addition to her vault score, Paulus notched a career-best tally in the all-around with a 39.250. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native won the all-around while tying for top honors on vault. Iowa State's team score of 194.375 was enough to beat Alaska's 188.050 while falling to No. 15 Denver's 195.650.
Paulus' vault quickly earned her a place in the Iowa State (2-3 overall, 0-1 Big 12) record books. It trails only Janet Anson and Shelly Kringen's 10.0 and a 9.975 from Anson on the all-time leader board.
"Warming up, (Celine) looked amazing," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. "It was the sharpest she has looked all season. I was just hoping she could carry it into the meet, which she clearly did. I told her after the meet that she is capable of scoring 39.500 in the all-around after what she showed tonight. She just needs to get a little sharper on bars and do her normal beam routine which she did not execute tonight."
Paulus and Denver's Moriah Martin tied for the vault title. Martin also won top bars honors with a 9.825 tally. Denver's Simona Castro was the top scorer on beam with a 9.850. The Pioneers' Jorie Hall posted the top score on floor with 9.875, and Paulus won the all-around.
Iowa State started on bars and were buoyed by sophomore Megan McDonald's career-best 9.800 to start the meet. However, Iowa State could not keep the momentum going and were forced to count a fall en route to a 48.050 bars score.
"We have shown improvement from each meet this season, but we did not show the improvement I was hoping for tonight," Ronayne said. "We still need to sharpen on bars and fix some of the little things that are holding us back from scoring as high I know we should. However, I do not want it to take away from some great performances we had tonight, especially Celine's vault and all-around effort."
Iowa State rotated to beam for its second event, and all six gymnasts did not have a fall. The Cyclones went on to score 48.600 on the apparatus, up from the team's average of 48.508. Henrietta Green and Michelle Browning led the Cyclones with 9.750 scores.
For its third rotation, Iowa State was on floor and tallied 48.725. Paulus delivered a season-high-tying 9.850 while Michelle Shealy notched a season-best 9.825.
The Cyclones finished on vault and produced a season-best 49.000 on the apparatus. The Cyclones' team tally was the highest they have produced since a 49.150 on March 14, 2010. In addition to Paulus' 9.950, Browning produced a solid 9.800. Michelle Shealy and Hailey Johnson tallied season-high 9.775s.
The Cyclones travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. for a three-team meet against Oklahoma and Southeast Missouri State on Friday. The competition is set to begin at 7 p.m. CST.
