AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team beat the Drake Bulldogs 1-0 on Wednesday in Ames behind a shutout pitching performance from Taylor Smith (2-1). The Cyclones (10-19, 0-3 Big 12) got all seven innings of work in the circle from Smith, as the sophomore gave up no runs on just three hits while striking out two Drake (13-15, 6-0 Missouri Valley) batters.
After three and a half scoreless innings, Iowa State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on first baseman Erica Miller's RBI double to left field. Miller's double scored teammate Lexi Slater, who had recorded a double of her own to start off the inning and put herself in scoring position when Miller came to bat. The Cyclones nearly added a second run in the inning, but pinch runner Erin Johnson (running for Tori Torrescano) was tagged out while attempting to steal home.
Neither team was able to get on the board during the final three innings, although the Cyclones did load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a Tori Torrescano double to left field.
Drake reliever Rebekah Schmidt (3-5) gave up one run on three hits, all doubles, while striking out two.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Friday to take on Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas at 6 p.m. CST.
