STILLWATER, Okla. - An early first half penalty kick proved to be the difference between Iowa State and the No. 17 Oklahoma State soccer teams Friday night. In the Cyclones' Big 12 road opener, the Cowgirls won 1-0 despite ISU holding a statistical advantage at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Iowa State (8-5 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) outshot Oklahoma State (10-3 overall, 1-2 Big 12) 16-9 and also had a 6-5 corner kick edge in the match.
The Cowgirls' Megan Marchesano scored the lone goal of the match 12:58 in via a penalty kick.
The Cyclones controlled possession in the first half and held a clear 11-2 shots advantage at the break and also had two corner kicks to the Cowgirls' one. Iowa State's best chance in the opening stanza came when senior Megan Longobardi rattled the crossbar from approximately 15 yards out.
Longobardi went on to tally a team-high five shots in the match with three being on goal. The Cyclone senior's five shots were a career high, bettering her four-shot effort from the match at South Dakota State his year.
Sophomore Andrea Swanson played the full 90 minutes at goalkeeper for the Cyclones and registered three saves. Swanson's season record dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
The Cyclones travel to Texas Tech for their next match. Iowa State meets the Red Raiders Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in a league tilt.
