MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Iowa State gymnastics team (2-5 overall, 0-2 Big 12 Conference) delivered its highest score of the season but West Virginia (5-4 overall, 1-1 Big 12) also produced its best mark of the campaign en route to a 196.150-194.825 Mountaineer victory Sunday at the WVU Coliseum. The competition was Iowa State's first-ever visit to Morgantown and marked the inaugural Big 12 duel between the two programs.
The Cyclones had career-best performances from two of all-around competitors at the event. Elizabeth Stranahan made her all-around debut and scored 39.050, the highest score this season by a Cyclone. Henrietta Green also chipped in with a career-best all-around score of 39.000.
"Our team continued to show improvement," Iowa State head coach Jay Ronanye said. "I am happy that we did well in a new arena after competing on Friday. I am very proud of the performance of a number of our gymnasts, but we continue to give away tenths that are easily correctable. "
Iowa State's Michelle Shealy earned a first-place finish on beam with a season-high score of 9.875. Shealy's score was the highest by a Cyclone on any event this season.
Iowa State's Milan Ivory and Green tied for first place on floor with West Virginia's Alaska Richardson. All three registered 9.850 on the event.
West Virginia's Jaida Lawrence won the vault competition with a score of 9.875. The Mountaineers' Hope Sloanhoffer and Kaylyn Millick tied for top honors on bars with tallies of 9.875.
Millick earned top honors in the all-around with a score of 39.375. Stranahan's 39.050 effort was good for second place.
In addition to their overall team score, the Cyclones produced season-high marks on both beam (48.875) and vault (48.625). Iowa State has increased its season-high score at every meet this season.
The Cyclones also posted a number of career-high scores at the event. Stranahan tallied a career-best 9.750 on vault and on beam (9.800). Ivory also notched a personal best on beam with a 9.800 effort. Ivory tied her career high on floor with a 9.850 mark and Green posted a personal best score of 9.850 on floor.
Iowa State returns home for its next meet. The Cyclones play host to Northern Illinois Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Hilton Coliseum.
