Cyclones Finish Weekend With Three Champions

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Iowa State tennis team wrapped up its last fall tournament of the season with three singles champions and two runner-ups finishes at the Juan Varon Memorial Wildcat Tennis Invitational.

Liza Buss, Alejandra Galvis and Regina Espindola all finished their weekend at the Juan Varon Memorial Invitational with a first-place finishes.

Buss, a freshman, started the day off strong by defeating Sonja Larsen from Barry, 6-2, 6-4, to win the gold bracket. Samantha Budai finished third in the same bracket by beating Mina Matsuba, 8-7 (0) from Bethune-Cookman.

Alejandra Galvis earned ISU's second championship of the day. Galvis won the maroon bracket by defeating teammate Claudia Toledo, 6-2, 6-4.

Regina Espindola wrapped up the weekend on a strong note with the third championship win of the day. Espindola beat Clare Mendall from Central Florida, 7-5, 6-2, to win the white bracket.

Annabella Bonadonna was the other Cyclone athlete who earned a runner-up finish. Bonadonna fell to Monica Montias from Central Florida, 6-2, 6-2. The runner-up finish marked a strong ending to her first fall tournament season.

Head coach Armando Espinosa left the weekend pleased with his team's performance.

“We were in pretty good shape to come out. I was happy with how we performed,” Espinosa said. “We wanted some good matches outdoors in hot weather and playing on clay added a different element.”

The final fall tournament of three should leave the team with some strong momentum for the spring season.

“The competition was strong," Espinosa said. "Barry's a strong division 2 team and Bethune-Cookman gave us some good matches."

The Cyclones will kick off their spring season back in Florida on January 9 in St. Augustine, Fla., against Flagler.
