Cyclones Cruise To 83-61 Win Over Texas State

CANCUN, Mexico – Iowa State's women's basketball team (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12) cruised to an 83-61 victory over Texas State (2-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) in the opening game of the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. Sophomore Bryanna Fernstrom tied her career-high with 25 points and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds. Seanna Johnson also grabbed her third-straight double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 boards.

How it Happened…
Bry Fernstrom paced the Cyclones in the early going after grabbing her first start of the season. She scored the first seven points of the game and nine of ISU's first 11. Iowa State would grab a 14-12 lead in the first quarter after a 3-pointer by Kidd Blaskowsky, a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Bridget Carleton would nab a 3-pointer on ISU's next possession as the Cyclones widened their lead to 17-12. With 0.7 seconds left in the first quarter, Seanna Johnson inbounded the ball to Fernstrom, who netted a short jumper to give ISU a 22-15 lead to close out the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cyclones marched on to a game-high 13-point lead to close the first half, 38-25, after a pair of free-throw makes by Carleton. Fernstrom led Iowa State with 11 points and eight rebounds in the first half, with Johnson grabbing eight points, six rebounds and three assists to her name.

The third quarter was the Fernstrom show as the sophomore piled on 12 points and two rebounds. Iowa State would shoot lights out with a 9-of-15 performance from the floor, which was good for 60 percent from the field. The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Cyclones grew their lead to as much as 22 with 3:22 to play. Iowa State closed out the game with an 83-61 victory over Texas State.

Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Bryanna Fernstrom. After earning her first start of the season, the sophomore from Center City, Minn. put on a show for the Cyclone fans in attendance. She tallied her second-career double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Fernstrom was 12-of-14 from the floor and made a career-high 12 field goals.
