AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team took a tough loss at home last Friday night against No. 19 Minnesota. Freshman Haylee Young tied two career highs to help bring the team an overall score of 194.125. The Golden Gophers won the meet with a team score of 196.350.
Young led the Cyclones on floor and vault and brought in a 39.325 to tie her career high on the all-around. She also tied her career high on vault with a 9.875.
The Cyclones competed on a night when Iowa State honored former men's gymnastics head coach Ed Gagnier. Gagnier was the founder of the ISU men's gymnastics program which went on to win three NCAA team titles and 10 Big 8 team titles.
Vault
Iowa State started the meet with a 48.900 on vault. Haylee Young led the team on the event, tying her career high score of 9.875. Caitlin Brown and Micole O'Dell followed her with two 9.775's. Briana Ledesma and Kelsey Paz also contributed scores of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.
Floor
Haylee Young led the team on floor as well, earning a score of 9.850. Caitlin Brown also performed well, bringing in a 9.800 for the Cyclones. Hilary Green received a 9.775 and Kristen DeCosta earned a 9.750 for her routine. The overall team score on floor was 48.875.
Bars
Freshmen Haylee Young and Briana Ledesma brought in the two highest scores for Iowa State on the uneven bars, each earning a 9.775. Caitlin Brown earned a 9.700 and Sara Townsend scored a 9.600 to bring the team score on the event to 48.425.
Beam
Alex Marasco, Haylee Young, and Caitlin Brown let the Cyclones on balance beam. Marasco earned the highest score for ISU with a 9.850. Young followed close behind her with a 9.825. Brown also helped the team out with a 9.800 on beam. The overall team score on the event was 47.925.
All Around
Haylee Young tied her career high in the all-around with a score of 39.325. She has earned this score twice before this season, both times at home. Caitlin Brown earned an all-around score of 39.075.
Coming Up
The Cyclones will travel to State College, Pennsylvania next weekend for a four way meet. They will be taking on Brockport State, Penn State, and Penn at 3:00 p.m. next Saturday.
