AMES, Iowa – Iowa State gymnasts Caitlin Brown and Haylee Young earned All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team honors, the conference announced Thursday morning. Brown earned All-Big 12 on beam and in the all-around while Young earned her honor in the all-around as well.
Brown, a senior from Apple Valley, Minn., earned her third career All-Big 12 honor as she is a repeat All-Big 12 honoree in the all-around. She becomes the fifth Cyclone to earn multiple All-Big 12 nods in the all-around, joining Michelle Browning (2011, 2012), Janet Anson (2006, 2007), Erin Dethloff (2004, 2005) and Sissy Huey (1999, 2001, 2002). Brown sits atop the Big 12 with an all-around regional qualifying score (RQS) of 39.315. She has been performing at her best late in the season, as the last two weeks of the season has seen her put up her two highest scores of the season with a 39.375 at Iowa and a career-high tying 39.400 against Temple last weekend.
On the balance beam, Brown earned Iowa State's 16th All-Big 12 award on beam and is the 10th Cyclone gymnast to receive the honor, the first since Janet Anson in 2007. Brown has scored a 9.875 or better in eight of 11 meets for the Cyclones and has been at 9.900 or better on five instances. Twice this season, against Oregon State and Southeast Missouri on Jan. 18 and last weekend against Temple, Brown tied the school record on balance beam with a 9.950. Brown is the fourth Cyclone to score 9.950 multiple times on beam in her career.
Young, a freshman from West Des Moines, Iowa, is the first Iowa State freshman since Sissy Huey in 1999 to be named All-Big 12 in the all-around. She is the fifth freshman in Big 12 history to earn All-Big 12 honors in the all-around, the first since Nebraska's Kylie Stone in 2006. The Cyclone freshman has competed in the all-around at all 11 meets for Iowa State this season, recording a score of 39.200 or better 11 times, with a career-high 39.325, which she has achieved three times. Young is the only Cyclone gymnast to have scores of 9.900 or better in two events, earning 9.9s on beam and floor.
Iowa State is back in action on Saturday at the Big 12 Championship, hosted by Oklahoma. Action at the Lloyd Noble Center starts at 5 p.m.
