AMES, Iowa - Iowa State junior centerfielder
Brittany Gomez broke Iowa State's school records for hits in a single-season and career in Friday afternoon's 11-4 loss to Kansas at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Gomez led off the bottom of the first with a double down the leftfield line, the 217th hit of her career and passing Jenny Condon's (1987-90) 216 for the most in school history. In the bottom of the fourth, Gomez beat out a bunt to the circle for her 78th hit of the 2015 season, taking down Condon's old record of 77 in 1988.
Aly Cappaert hit a pair of solo home runs in defeat. The Iowa State pitching staff struggled with control, issuing 12 walks. The Jayhak offense got a pair of 3-run home runs at crucial junctures to run away with the win.
KU On the Board First, ISU Gets Ahead
Kansas got off to a big start in the top of the first, drawing a pair of walks and posting a hit to load the bases with no outs. After an infield fly, Jessie Roane got KU on the board with an RBI-single. However, ISU made a big play to close the inning as
Lexi Slater fired Shannon McGinley's grounder home for a force, which
Sammie Hildreth threw to
Nychole Antillon at third for a force, too, for a 6-2-5 double play.
In the bottom of the second, ISU made a two-out rally aided by some KU fielding errors to get ahead. Hildreth drew a walk and Bingham reached on an error by KU's Maddie Stein at first. Gomez then drove in the tying run with her second hit of the game, a liner to left. ISU executed a double steal during
Maddie Reese's at-bat and a poor throw by Roane behind the plate allowed Bingham to come home and give ISU a 2-1 lead.
Naudin Homers KU Ahead
Kansas got right back to work in the fourth, drawing a walk and getting a Stein single. Two batters later, Kansas was back ahead and Chanin Naudin crushed a 3-run home run to left to give Kansas a 5-2 edge. This would start a 7-0 run by the Jayhawks that saw Kansas ahead 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Cappaert Bombs
Cappaert made the first cut into the Kansas lead to start teh bottom of the fifth, as she fired her 10th home run of the season to right to reduce the ISU deficit to 8-3. The homer saw Cappaert join
Tori Torrescano as the only players in school history with back-to-back 10-plus homer seasons.
Kansas ended any hopes of an ISU comeback in the top of the seventh as Danielle Chavez unloaded her 13th home run of the season to dead center, to give Kansas an 11-3 advantage.
Cappaert led off the bottom of the seventh and gave ISU fans something to celebrate with a lead-off home run, her 11th of the season to match her 11 from 2014.
Gomez Record Watch
While Gomez has secured the single-season and all-time hits records, there are a couple of records in her sights. Her 3-for-4 day at the plate saw her batting average improve to .431 for the season, further cementing her chances of becoming the second player in ISU history to hit over .400 in a season. She is just four points away from Mary Jo Collins' single-season batting average record of .435 in 1978.
On the basepaths, Gomez's steal in the second inning was her 30th of the season, putting her just one from tying and two from breaking her own single-season record for steals in a season, 31 in 2013.
