Leading Off
Winners of seven of the last eight outings and five straight, Iowa State will head to Lubbock for its third Big 12 series and first ranked matchups of the season. The series will be the two schools' first since 2023, as an Ames snowstorm canceled the scheduled 2024 set of contests.
The Cyclones are hitting the road after defending their home turf on Wednesday, defeating in-state foe Drake, 6-5, in eight innings. Trailing for most of the game, ISU tied things up in the fifth and eventually walked things off in the eighth to earn their 20th win.
Texas Tech has been dominant on the season and is riding a six-game winning streak of its own. The Red Raiders currently sit first in the conference, having dropped just one game, and are ranked second in the country.
Scouting the Cyclones
Iowa State boasts a balanced lineup, as seven Cyclones are batting over .300 through seven weeks of play. Reagan Bartholomew leads the team with a batting average of .457 – good enough for fourth in the conference. Bartholomew has 42 hits, one more than teammate Jessie Clemons, to lead the team.
Bartholomew (30) and Clemons (29) are both neck and neck in runs scored, while Clemons leads the team in doubles with 15. Tatum Johnson and Sydney Malott are tied for a squad-best seven home runs, while Johnson leads the team in RBI with 32. Malott is just behind Johnson with 26 RBI of her own.
In the circle, five Cyclones have seen action. Lauren Schurman leads the way with a team-low ERA of 3.05. Schurman has hurled 75.2 innings, a team-high, and owns 43 punchouts, also a team-high. Freshmen Liv Palumbo (5-2) and Hailey Holtz (0-0), senior Jaiden Ralston (1-3), and Michigan State transfer Ava Mullen (3-3) round out the pitchers for ISU.
The Cyclones own a .330 batting average and have produced 211 runs on 275 hits. The team has 106 extra-base hits with 198 RBI and has drawn 125 walks. ISU holds a collective 4.12 ERA and fields the ball at a .975 clip.
Opponent Outlook
Texas Tech has one of the most potent lineups in the nation, as all nine starters for the Red Raiders bat over .300. Kaitlyn Terry, a two-way player who pitches, too, owns a team-high batting average of .544. Mihyia Davis leads the team with 53 hits, 18 of which have gone for extra bases.
The Red Raider pitching staff is just as impressive, spearheaded by the aforementioned Terry and standout Nijaree Canady. Canady has 108 strikeouts while Terry has 77. Those two, along with freshman Samantha Lincoln, all hold ERAs under 1.8 on the year.
The Red Raiders own a .397 batting average and have produced 327 runs on 329 hits. The team has 152 extra-base hits with 302 RBI and has drawn 145 walks. TTU holds a collective 1.51 ERA and fields the ball at a .975 clip.
