AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's and women's cross country programs are headed to Madison, Wisconsin to take part in the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational at the Zimmer Championship Course on Friday. The meet will be live streamed on FloTrack Pro here.
The Wisconsin Invitational, named by FloTrack as the top cross country meet in the nation this year, will feature 17 of the nation's top 30 women's teams, and 19 of the top 30 on the men's side, according to U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll.
The Cyclone women will take the course first in the women's championship race at 12:30 p.m., followed by the men at 1:20 p.m. Friday's meet marks the final regular season test for both the ISU men's and women's teams before they travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Big 12 Championship on Oct. 29.
Iowa State's last competition came on Sept. 24 at the Roy Griak Invitational. The young women's squad finished 14th behind a top-10 finish from senior Perez Rotich. Following junior Erin Hooker (41st – 22:39) and sophomore Evelyne Guay (79th – 23:15), the remainder of Iowa State's lineup at the Griak was comprised entirely of true freshmen and redshirt fresmen. Megan Schott, Jasmine Staebler, Erinn Stenman-Fahey and Gwynne Wright all got their first taste of an elite collegiate meet, which head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough is hoping will pay dividends down the road.
The Iowa State men had a coming out party of sorts, finished second at the Griak meet, which featured seven nationally ranked teams. The Cyclones, who came into the race unranked, utilized the pack running approach that ISU Director of Track and Cross Country Martin Smith is known so well for teaching. Iowa State scorers Toby Hardwick, Thomas Pollard, Andrew Jordan, Josef Andrews and Kevyn Hoyos all finished within five seconds of each other to lift the Cyclones to their lofty positioning.
Since that race, the Cyclone men have risen to No. 14 in the USTFCCCA rankings. It marks the program's highest ranking since Oct. 14, 2008, when they were the No. 11 team in the country.
