Ames, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team (8-5-1, 2-3-1 Big 12) will take a break from conference play to take on the Drake Bulldogs (9-4-2, 0-3-1 The Valley) in the Cyclones' final home game of the season. The Cyclones and Bulldogs will clash on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
Last Time Out
The Cyclones picked up a Big 12 win over Texas on Friday night to put Iowa State in good position as the Big 12 Championship is approaching. After the senior night festivities, the Cyclones came out on a mission. In just the fifth minute, senior Koree Willer took the ball down the left sideline beating multiple Texas defenders. She made it to the end line and chipped a perfect cross in between a pair of Longhorns to a streaking Hannah Cade for the early goal. Iowa State put the game away midway through the second half when a pair of sophomores linked up. Klasey Medelberg got to the end line, just as Willer did earlier on, and set up a clean shot for Taylor Wagner to make the game 2-0.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Drake relies on their strong defense to get their wins. Eight of their nine wins have come by way of shutout and they also have two 0-0 double overtime ties. The Bulldogs have allowed 12 goals this season, and three of those came against a South Dakota State team that the Cyclones defeated, 1-0, early on in 2016 and in three goals in their most recent game against Illinois State.
The Bulldogs will bring a balanced attack to Ames on Tuesday night. Eleven different Bulldogs have put the ball in the back of the net, and Alyssa Brand leads the way with five goals and an assist. Junior Kasey Hurt has been a facilitator on the offensive end and has also capitalized on set pieces with six assists to go with her one goal.
What to Watch For
Iowa State will look to send a message early on. The Cyclones were able to score in just the fifth minute against Texas and the team was able to rely on their strong defense to carry them the rest of the game. With an early goal, the Iowa State attack was able to go at the defense with numbers on counter attacks. Koree Willer and Klasey Medelberg, two Cyclone forwards, made multiple plays to give ISU scoring chances and they each picked up an assist. Look for those two to carry that momentum into this matchup with the Bulldogs.
