AMES, Iowa – A strong defensive performance by Iowa State led to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) sweep of West Virginia Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The win, ISU's third in a row and fifth in the last six matches, moves the Cyclones to 13-9 on the year, and 5-5 in Big 12 play. WVU is now 12-13 overall and 3-8 in league play.
Iowa State restricted WVU to a .106 hitting percentage behind 12.0 total blocks, the home side's second-highest output of the campaign. The Cyclone offense hit .322 and was led by eight kills each from Ciara Capezio and Jess Schaben. Hali Hillegas had 19 digs on the night.
Blocking Leads ISU to First Set Win
Both teams had areas they were able to take advantage in early on. ISU enjoyed success on the block, racking up a quick four blocks in the first 21 points of the match. The Cyclones also got some strong serving from Hali Hillegas, with the Cyclone libero recording the first two aces of her career. However, ISU was unable to pull away, as some early hitting errors allowed the Mountaineers to keep it within one at 16-15 ISU. Iowa State went on a 4-0, helped by a pair of WVU attack errors to get ahead 20-15. Set point came up at 24-18, and was converted on the first effort when Alexis Conaway put away a WVU overpass to make it 25-18 Cyclones.
Cyclones Get Ahead Early to Make it 2-0
Iowa State continued the momentum into the second set, flying out to a 5-1 lead with Hillegas recording another ace. The Cyclones eventually established a comfortable five-to-six point advantage, but struggled to put away the Mountaineers for good. West Virginia was able get the ISU lead down to three points at 22-19, but the home team was able to bring it to 25 points. Set point arrived at 24-20, and was once again put away on the first try when Grace Lazard and Samara West stuffed Payton Caffrey to make it 25-20 Cyclones.
Block Steps Up Again to Complete Sweep
Despite conceding the first three points of the set, Iowa State resumed normal service fairly quickly, tying things up at 3-3 and moving ahead 7-6 on a Suzanne Horner ace. However, the Mountaineers hung tough and pulled back ahead 11-9 on an ISU setting error. With WVU ahead 14-12, Iowa State got back into it via the block, as a pair of stuffs powered a 4-0 run that got ISU ahead at 16-14. The home Cyclones could not pull away, as WVU went on a 4-1 run completed by a block of Kuhrt to tie the set at 23-23. West Virginia gave ISU match point at 24-23, and the Cyclones made no mistake as Capezio and Conaway teamed up to deny Mia Swanegan and complete the match.
Cyclone Notes
*Iowa State hit .322 as a team, the fourth time in the last six matches the Cyclones have hit at least .300.
*ISU recorded 12.0 total blocks on the evening, the second-most by the Cyclones in a match in 2016 (13.0 vs. Montana, Sept. 10).
*Alexis Conaway tied a season-high with six total blocks (all assists).
*Jess Schaben set a career-high with six total blocks (all assists). Her previous high was four (one solo, three assists) against Iowa on Sept. 9.
*Hali Hillegas recorded 19 digs, her 11th-straight match in double figures.
*Hillegas also posted three service aces, the first three aces of her career. The last Cyclone to have the first three aces of her career in the same match was Mackenzie Bigbee at Iowa in 2013.
