LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State fought off a valiant Texas Tech in five sets 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12) Friday evening at United Supermarkets Arena. The win, the Cyclones' fourth-in-a-row and sixth in the last seven matches moves their record to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in the Big 12. TTU falls to 10-17 and 0-12 in conference competition.
Jess Schaben led ISU with a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs, while Grace Lazard tied a career-best with 14 kills at a .524 hitting percentage. Hali Hillegas led the back row with 25 digs, while Monique Harris had a double-double of 25 assists and 10 digs.
6-0 Run Gives Red Raiders Set One
The Iowa State defense took a while to get into the action, as Tech put away six of its first eight shots for kills to find itself ahead 8-6. The Cyclone offense struggled to find reliable hitting aside from Samara West as TTU ballooned its lead to 16-9 via a 6-0 run. Grace Lazard started heating up for ISU, making impacts on offense and behind the service line to bring it back within three at 19-16. Alexis Conaway and West combined for a block to cut the Red Raider lead to two at 21-19, but ISU ran out of time to make the comeback. Set point arrived at 24-19 and was put away on the first asking when Katy Keenan put away a Cyclone overpass to make it 25-19 Texas Tech.
Strong Serving Evens Match for ISU
Ciara Capezio was injured on the first point of the frame, thrusting Genesis Miranda into the spotlight and into passing on each rotation. The Cyclones offense struggled to find opportunities to get ahead, but Tech struggled behind the service line to keep ISU in it early. The Cyclones got a pair of strong serving runs by Hali Hillegas and Suzanne Horner to put together an 8-1 run to get ahead 17-11. Tech made a late push for the set, but their struggles from behind the service line came back to bite them again. Set point for the Cyclones came at 24-20, and was put away on the first try when Lazard and Jess Schaben got up to block Lauren Douglass at 25-20 ISU.
Big Block Gives ISU a 2-1 Lead
Iowa State got the first four points of the third frame, giving them an early advantage to work with. The Red Raider offense could not find the court, as six of ISU's first 10 points came via attack errors or service errors by TTU. The Cyclones were able to find some separation via the block as West and the combo of Lazard and Schaben picked up critical blocks to make it 17-11 ISU. Tech was able to close the gap to four a couple of times, but once again it was the ISU block that stepped up and helped put the set away. The Cyclones got to set point at 24-17, and was converted when Sarah Redding sent her shot wide to make it 25-17 ISU.
Tech Fights Back Late to Force Fifth Set
Texas Tech brought pressure via the block early on, getting big at the net to get ahead 4-2. ISU showed off its offensive versatility to tie things back up at 7-7, but the Tech block stepped up again to move back ahead 10-7. The Cyclones caught some breaks as the Tech offense misfired on some shots to help move the visitors ahead at 14-13. Tech called a timeout at 17-14 ISU and it worked as TTU ran off the next four points to get back ahead at 18-17. ISU tied it up at 18s, 19s and 20s before Tech pushed ahead at 22-20 on a block of Miranda. Texas Tech made it to set point at 24-21, and forced a fifth on the third try when Douglass picked up a kill at 25-23.
ISU Blocks Way to Fifth Set Win
It was all about the middles to begin with Lazard and Douglass combining for six of the first eight points in the set. ISU was first to blink, as they got the two-point edge at 6-4 on a Keenan kill. The teams traded two-point swings, as Iowa State got it tied at 6-6, Tech was back ahead at 8-6 at the switch and the Cyclones got big at the net to knot it back up at 8-8. Iowa State was given a third-straight point when Redding fired wide to make it 9-8 ISU. The visitors made it 12-9 when Lazard and Schaben teamed up again for consecutive blocks. Iowa State was first to match point at 14-11 when Kuhrt converted down the line, and wrapped it up on the second try when Miranda fired off the block to make it 15-12 ISU.
