ORLANDO – No. 21 Iowa State improved to 5-0 and advanced to the championship game of the 2016 Advocare Invitational on Friday with a 73-56 win over Miami (FL) (4-1). Deonte Burton's versatility in the Iowa State offense was on full display, as the senior scored a season-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go with seven rebounds.
How it Happened
The Cyclones came out of the gates looking to put Thursday's cold shooting performance behind them in a 73-71 win over Indiana State. Iowa State did just that, opening the game on an 11-4 spurt while splashing home their first three attempts from beyond the arc, including a pair of triples from Deonte Burton.
In what was a sign of things to come in a back-and-forth opening half, a reversal of fortunes ensued and the Hurricanes went on a 12-0 run, while Iowa State went over six minutes without scoring a point. Miami had taken a 16-11 advantage before back-to-back buckets from Donovan Jackson and Burton knotted the game at 16-all. Despite getting only seven first-half minutes from Monté Morris due to foul trouble, the Cyclones extended its lead to as many as eight and would lead 35-29 at the break. Burton already had a season-high of 12 points to lead all scorers at the intermission.
Coming out of the locker room, Miami cut the Iowa State lead to just two on several occasions, but at 46-44 just over six minutes into the period, that was as close as the Hurricanes would get. The explosive Cyclone offense proceeded to go on a 17-2 to take its biggest lead of the game at 63-46 while holding Miami without a basket for over eight minutes. Five different Cyclone scored during the run, including five from Jackson.
The Cyclone defense powered Iowa State through the deciding stretch of the game, forcing Miami into 11 turnovers in the second half and kept the Hurricanes out of an offensive rhythm throughout. Iowa State piled up 10 steals in the game, led by Nick Weiler-Babb with three. Iowa State ended the game 8-of-19 from 3-point range, while Miami shot just 2-of-16.
